C8 Corvette Stingray Recall Overview:

  • Who: General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are recalling 22 C8 Corvette Stingray vehicles.
  • Why: Certain 2021 and 2022 C8 Corvette Stingray vehicles have improperly manufactured half shafts that are missing ball bearings, which may cause a loss of drive power.
  • Where: The recalled Corvette Stingray vehicles were manufactured at the GM Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky.

General Motors has issued a product safety recall for certain 2021 and 2022 C8 Corvette Stingray vehicles with improperly manufactured half shafts installed.

Only 22 Corvette Stingrays are affected by the GM recall, and owners of the affected vehicles will be notified of the issue by mail on April 4.

Corvette Stingray Defect May Increase Crash Risk

The improperly manufactured half shafts are reportedly missing one or more ball bearings, which may cause a loss of drive power. A sudden loss of drive power can be hazardous while driving in traffic, potentially increasing the risk of a crash. The Corvette defect may also cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

“On September 2, 2021, a GM engineer conducted a warranty inspection of a rear half shaft recovered from a 2021 Chevrolet Corvette that fractured and caused the vehicle to lose propulsion,” GM said in the defect report.

“Upon inspection, it was found that the half shaft was missing two of six ball bearings. Discussions with the supplier indicated the supplier may have failed to discover the misbuild due to a potential failure in its inspection process.”

GM concluded that a batch of parts from a particular axle supplier may not have been properly inspected.

No Injuries From Corvette Stingray Defect, GM Says

“A review of field data completed on January 22, 2022, revealed no additional relevant field incidents,” according to GM. “GM is not aware of any injuries or crashes related to this condition.”

As part of the Corvette Stingray recall, dealers will be instructed to inspect and replace the half shaft assemblies at no cost to the vehicle owner.
