Depositphotos_62809183_m-2015General Electric Company and CBS Corporation, among other named defendants, face a mesothelioma lawsuit filed by a woman on behalf of her deceased husband. She alleges he became exposed to asbestos, leading to his development of mesothelioma, a terminal cancer, and subsequent death.

Plaintiff Theresa V. filed the lawsuit on behalf of the late Doue L. in Connecticut Superior Court.

According to the mesothelioma lawsuit, Doue was employed by one of the named defendants as a draftsman between 1962 and 1997. He also served in the United States Navy between 1955 and 1959.

It was during his shipyard employment and military service, that carried through to the late 1970s, where he was exposed to asbestos products, the mesothelioma lawsuit alleges.

Teresa says that the defendants were in the business of manufacturing and selling products that contained asbestos. She claims her husband was never warned about possible asbestos exposure nor was he warned about the dangers of asbestos exposure.

The mesothelioma lawsuit alleges that as a direct result of asbestos product exposure, Doue developed mesothelioma, a terminal cancer.

Teresa claims that her husband sustained severe injuries and damages including suffering from significant pain and anguish. They were also required to spend large sums of money for medical treatment and care.

According to the mesothelioma lawsuit, Doue’s mesothelioma condition severely restricted his usual activities, worsening his symptoms and condition and eventually lead to his premature death.

Dangers of Asbestos Exposure

According to the National Cancer Institute, asbestos is a mineral. It refers to six mineral fibers naturally present in the environment. Asbestos, which is present as bundles of fibers, is resistant to chemicals, heat, and fire. It also does not conduct electricity. These are some of the reasons why asbestos is used in a wide variety of industrial and commercial applications.

Asbestos, used commercially in the United States since the late 1800s, has been used in a wide variety of settings such as the shipbuilding industry, automotive industry, and construction and building industries. For example, asbestos has been used to insulate boilers, steam pipes, used in vehicle brake shoes and clutch pads, and used for roofing, fireproofing, and sound absorption.

Asbestos has been classified as a known human carcinogen, or a substance that causes cancer, by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Although rare, the most common form of cancer found with exposure to asbestos is mesothelioma, a cancer affecting the membranes that line the abdomen and chest. Cancers also associated with asbestos exposure include cancers of the larynx, ovary, and lung.

There is evidence that everyone is exposed to asbestos at some point in their life and that there are low levels of asbestos present in our water, soil, and air. However, those that are exposed to asbestos on a regular basis are most at risk of developing a form of cancer or illness due to asbestos exposure.

The Mesothelioma Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-01975-AWT, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut.
