In August, the Federal Trade Commission sent the following refunds to consumers who qualified for benefits from settlements made with the agency to resolve various claims.

BCO Consulting refunds

The FTC sent more than 6,2000 refund checks worth over $743,000 to consumers who paid for student debt relief services from BCO Consulting.

The refunds were sent in response to FTC claims that the company and its operators — which went under several different names — impersonated the Department of Education, collected illegal upfront fees and falsely promised to reduce or forgive student loans.

Consumers who received a refund check were asked to cash it within 90 days.

Ring refunds

The FTC sent a second round of refund payments to consumers who had an account with home security camera company Ring and who accepted an initial payment sent in April 2024.

The refunds are the result of a settlement made to end FTC claims that failures by Ring gave its employees too much access to customer videos and made customer accounts vulnerable to online attacks.

The FTC previously sent more than $3.9 million in refunds in April 2024 and sent an additional 80,552 payments totaling more than $1.5 million in August.

Consumers who got a refund check were asked to cash it within 90 days, while consumers who received a PayPal payment were asked to accept it within 30 days.

Consumer Health Benefits Association refunds

The FTC sent a second round of refund payments to consumers who paid Consumer Health Benefits Association (CHBA) for allegedly deceptive medical discount plans sold as health insurance, who cashed an initial check sent in November 2023 and who paid CHBA more than $249.

The refunds are the result of a settlement made to end FTC claims that CHBA sold misleading medical discount plans to people looking for health insurance and made it hard for customers to get refunds or cancel their plans.

The FTC previously sent more than $4.8 million in refunds in November 2023 and sent an additional 27,256 checks totaling over $1.8 million in August.

Consumers who received a refund check were asked to cash it within 90 days.

RevMountain refunds

The FTC sent a second round of refund payments to consumers who were allegedly charged expensive hidden fees by marketing company RevMountain LLC for supposedly low-cost trials for tooth whiteners and other products, who accepted an initial payment made in April 2023 and who paid RevMountain more than $375.

The refunds are the result of a settlement made to end FTC claims that RevMountain used deceptive claims and confusing terms to trick people into providing their billing information and charge them for unwanted subscriptions.

The FTC previously sent more than $780,300 in refunds in April 2023 and sent an additional 13,602 checks totaling more than $257,600 in August.

Consumers who received a refund check were asked to cash it within 90 days.

Arise settlement

The FTC sent more than 98,000 checks totaling more than $6.7 million to individuals who worked for gig work company Arise sometime between Jan. 1, 2019, and Dec. 31, 2023.

The payments are the result of a settlement made to end FTC claims that Arise falsely advertised itself as a lucrative gig work opportunity and that most workers ended up making less than the promised hourly rate.

Individuals who received a check were asked to cash it within 90 days.
