Goulds Electronics Inc. and other manufacturing companies are facing legal action from a Massachusetts couple, who alleges the husband developed mesothelioma as a result of the companies’ asbestos products.
Along with Goulds Electronics Inc., Nikko Materials USA Inc. and its affiliates allegedly manufactured products using asbestos, which the couple says caused the husband to be exposed to asbestos on a daily basis. Plaintiff couple Albert B. and Alice B. are filing this asbestos mesothelioma lawsuit seeking over $1 million for medical bills and other compensation.
Albert had reportedly been exposed to asbestos on a daily basis during his time as an electrician during his time in the U.S. Navy. Albert worked as an electrician’s mate aboard the USS Neosho from 1966 to 1969, and as an electrician at the Fore River shipyard in 1970.
These shipyards allegedly used materials from Goulds Electronics and the other companies named in the asbestos mesothelioma lawsuit, resulting in Albert being exposed to asbestos during his work period.
Albert reportedly developed mesothelioma in result of this asbestos exposure, and is filing legal action against the companies for failing to disclose the potential health problems associated with their products.
Overview of Asbestos Exposure Problems
Mesothelioma is a very rare form of lung cancer, which is specifically caused by asbestos exposure. This disease occurs when the victim is exposed to asbestos, inhaling or swallowing the microscopic fibers in the air and later becoming lodged in the mucus lining of the lungs.
These fibers eventually fester into cancer, which can take up to 50 years for the patients to show any symptoms. This often results in latent diagnosis, which means little treatment options and shortened life expectancies for patients. Patients who are diagnosed with mesothelioma often seek legal action against the manufacturing companies for failing to warn them against asbestos exposure.
Asbestos was used widely before the 1980s for a variety of manufacturing and insulation uses. Since it was inexpensive, fire resistant and chemical resistant, asbestos was a popular choice for many construction and manufacturing companies.
Asbestos popularity reached its peak during World War II, when a number of United States Navy warships used asbestos for insulation. This resulted in many veterans and shipyard workers exposed to asbestos, leading to latent health problems.
Albert is one of the many workmen exposed to asbestos during his lifetime, and he now faces a fatal disease. Albert complains the companies did not provide any protective equipment or disclose the problems with asbestos exposure, which allowed for the possibility of mesothelioma.
This Asbestos Mesothelioma Lawsuit is Case No. 1:17-cv-10700 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
