Ford recall overview:

  • Who: Ford is recalling 108,762 Escape SUVs.
  • Why: The liftgate hinge covers may detach while driving, posing a significant crash risk.
  • Where: The recall is active in the United States.

Ford has issued a recall for MORE THAN 108,000 Ford Escape SUVs due to an assembly defect that may cause liftgate hinge covers to detach while driving.

The recall notice, issued Dec. 19, covers 2020–2022 and 2025 Ford Escape models. According to the Ford recall, the trim at the top of the liftgate was not secured properly during assembly, which could lead to the hinge covers breaking loose and becoming road debris.

This poses a significant risk to other vehicles on the road, as a detached hinge cover can create a distraction or hazard, increasing the likelihood of a crash. “This is not a recall to be tardy about. It’s a ‘do today’ recall,” the recall notice emphasizes.

Drivers urged to look out for warning signs, Ford recall sAYS

On 2020–2022 Ford Escapes, some hinge covers were never fully engaged during assembly. For the 2025 models, a supplier issue with the DUAL LOCK attachment and over-flush installation can cause the cover to contact the liftgate and work itself loose over time.

Drivers may notice the cover sitting unevenly, extra wind noise, or a new rattle from the tailgate area.

“If it looks loose, sits unevenly, or you hear a new buzz from the tailgate at highway speed, slow down and get it checked,” the recall notice advises.

Ford is addressing the issue by offering a simple and free fix. Dealers will inspect both hinge covers and either reseat them or replace them as necessary.

Although owner notification letters will be mailed starting mid-January 2026, Ford encourages owners to check their Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) through Ford’s recall lookup or the NHTSA search and to book a service appointment as soon as possible.

For more information about the Ford recall, consumers can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Additionally, VINs involved in this Ford recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov website from Dec. 3, 2025.

In October, Ford issued a recall for 1.4 million vehicles across different years and models, such as the 2015-2019 Ford Flex, 2015 Ford Explorer and 2020 Ford Mustang due to a defect in the rearview cameras.

Ford says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the Ford recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
