A federaFord diesel engine settlementl class action lawsuit claims Ford continued to sell F-150 trucks, Mustangs and Explorers with “defective spark plugs and related engine defects” in model years 2004-2008, and did nothing to remedy the problem or to warn consumers about the defects.

According to the Ford defective spark plug class action lawsuit, Ford sold more than 2 million of these vehicles nationwide containing defective spark plugs that could only be removed with “exceptional and extraordinary efforts.” Ford issued as least three Technical Service Bulletins concerning the defects since 2006, but only issued them to authorized Ford dealerships and did not directly notify non-Ford automotive repair shops about the defects.

“Further, although Ford began receiving complaints from U.S. customers in August 2003, and developed its own tool to remove the defective plugs in 2005, Ford has provided no notice to Plaintiff or the Class Members about the defective spark plugs and related engine defects,” the Ford spark plug class action lawsuit states.

Not only did Ford fail to disclose the defects, it also failed to remedy the defects before selling or leasing them to consumers.

“In fact, even after Ford developed a special tool and procedure to remove the defective plugs, and after a replacement spark plug was developed, Ford continued to manufacture, sell, and lease the Covered Vehicles with the defects,” the class action lawsuit continues. “As a result of Ford’s knowing and intentional conduct, Plaintiff and Class Members have been required to spend hundreds, and in many instances, thousands of dollars more than reasonably could be anticipated to replace spark plugs — something that generally costs around $150.”

The Ford defective spark plug class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all persons and entities that purchased or leased vehicles in Florida manufactured by the Ford Motor Company that are covered by Ford’s Technical Service Bulletin 08-7-6 (e.g.; 2004 through 2008 model year Ford F-150 trucks, Ford Mustangs and Ford Explorers). It is also seeking to represent a Subclass of all Class Members whose spark plugs were removed, replaced, attempted to be removed, or attempted to be replaced by an authorized Ford dealership or repair center.

The Ford spark plug lawsuit is seeking class certification, damages, pre- and post-judgment interest, and attorney fees and court costs. It is also asking the Court to order Ford to notify owners and lessees about the defective spark plugs and to promptly repair and/or replace all defective spark plugs and related engine defects free of charge.

    I was recently told by the Ford dealership that the 5.4 engine in my 04 F-150 is in need of major repair due to damage to the rods, valves and cylinder heads. That it will cost $3900 w/o labor and since it has 165k miles the just wanted to replace with a remanufactured engine for $6500 including labor. Defective spark plugs being the cause?

    Just heard back from my service guys, all eight plugs broke off, the last one on the passenger side can’t be removed unless the engine is taken out. This after a whole day of labor, and the estimate to remove the engine, remove the last plug, and put it all back is another 20 hours. This is going to cost thousands. Truck has less than 150K miles. I used to swear by Ford, this is bullshit and they knew about it. How do I become part of this lawsuit?

        Rhonda, thank you for the info……..we took our 2008 F150 in for only (1) plug to be changed, my husband had changed the other (7) himself, that last one gave him a problem and they charged us $950 for (1) plug………. they then proceeded to tell us that while “working” on the truck that did a “new” process and ran the truck on only (7) plugs to try to heat it up……..what the heck is up with that !!!!! The truck has run right since and we now are hearing a slight knocking in the engine that was not there to begin with !!! Anyway, thank you for the info…………

    Just got my 2006 Lincoln Mark LT back from the Ford Dealership here in Indiana after a spark plug change. I am not at all happy with the defect Ford has in these engines when it comes to a what should be a simple plug change. I too was told the cost to replace these plugs would be $300. and if any of them break that would cost me extra per plug. I am just beside myself and cant believe that such a defect is simply ignored by Ford. They made the defect, put out Service bulletins and even special tools too and oh lets not forget a new one piece plug and the recommendation of using anitsize on the plug. PAY FOR YOUR mistake FORD! I BOUGHT THE TRUCK ONCE, I don’t want to buy it twice because you made a bad design .

    Getting ready to take my 2007 F150 in for plugs and dealer will not even give an estimate, sure Im going to get gouged on this. Would like to get in on this Class action. It cant be legal for Ford to do this. This is my Fourth Ford truck and will most certainly be the last.

    I have a 2003 F150 Harley Davidson Edition – The dealership replaced the spark plug with a Helix Coil Pack & it ran ok for about a year then it blew out again. They are saying they would have to replace the head to repair it. Has there been any resolution? And I need to find out how to be added?

    I purchased an ’08 Ford F-150 XLT flex fuel truck from Joe Cooper Ford, Midwest City, OK. 73110 3 months ago from there used car department. Shortly after this purchase, I recd the title showing that this was, in fact a fleet vehicle which they had recently purchased from an oilfield company. No one had mentioned this previously! After the purchase, I contacted Joe Coopers svc. dept for a tune up and oil change. I was told that the tune up would cost $750.00, plus an additional fee should any plugs break during the tune up! The oil change cost me $265.00, as this engine has a type of valve which commonly breaks, and this repair requires 2 hours labor, plus parts for an oil change! I have owned this vehicle now for 4 months(purchase date June 30, 2013), and my truck is presently at the transmission repair shop as the reverse band in the transmission has broken. This repair is to cost between $600.00 and $1850.00. I don’t yet have a specific cost as I just dropped it off today to determine the extent of the damage. Upon completion of the transmission repair, they are then going into the engine to repair the cam phasers! I was told that this repair seldom corrects the problem, and in all liklihood, I will be required to replace the engine altogether!!! I went to Joe Cooper Ford yesterday to discuss all of these issues that have surfaced on a vehicle purchased 4 months ago for $16,400.00, and was told that I must pay 99.00 to determine the extent of the damage, and should I choose to let them do the repairs, they would deduct the $99.00 from the total bill. I would not allow these crooks to change a tire on my sons bicycle!!! I strongly urge anyone considering the purchase of an automobile from this dealer to reconsider. This dealer charged me $30.00 for the keyless entry code, as they had misplaced it! Absolutely incredible. These guys should be locked up.     Have a 2007 f-150 king ranch and recently encountered a bucking action at 42mph and 1100rpm,consistently at this speed and rpm, took to dealer and they found #5 cyl. was misfiring. know this!! i bought this used, and a 5yr. ext. warrenty. the dealer found #5 coil bad which in turn took out the plug, they replaced both, ford only covered the coil, plugs are not covered. 3 mo. go by and same thing happens, plug is bad on same cyl. dealer replaced plug under defective part, 2wks. later same thing and now it is all 7 other plugs gone bad. the cost to replace is 620.00 provided no plugs break, the cost if this happens could go as high as 2000.00 to fix. I contacted ford directly to discuss this and they said there is nothing they can do for me. they did not inform me of any class action suit, nor mention of any problem with there plugs. then I find out about this action suit, how do i join this suit? before you try to replace your plugs run several cans of what is called seafoam through your tank, this will break down alot of carbon around the plugs to help ease the removal of the plugs.ford and dealealers will not take responsability for them breaking and you will pay any additional costs, this is totally not right for them to pass this on to us as ford owners, when ford has created this problem, and knowingly and willingly continued to use and sell this defective product. I agree with what some have said and fell, had i been told of this i would not have bought this truck.also due to the way i have been treated by ford and by the dealer working on this i will not buy another.
