Ford is recalling nearly 12,000 Ford F-150 Lightning battery electric vehicles over a defect that can cause a loss of steering control.
The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Dec. 19. It applies to 11,922 model year 2023-2024 Ford F-150 Lightning BEV vehicles.
According to the recall, the front upper control arm ball joint nut may not have been tightened properly in the trucks. This can cause the front upper control arm to detach from the knuckle assembly, the Ford recall says.
“A detached control arm can cause a loss of vehicle steering and control, increasing the risk of a crash,” the recall notice says.
Ford offers free fix for affected trucks
So far, Ford says it is aware of one vehicle accident related to the recall. In that case, the driver reported that they experienced “intermittent vibration” while driving at highway speed before the truck made a sudden, uncommanded left turn into a side rail.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Ford dealers will inspect the upper control arm ball joint nut and fix the issue free of charge, the recall states. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by Feb. 3, 2025.
This recall comes after Ford previously recalled almost 25,000 of its F-250, F-350 and F-450 vehicles in November, due to a rear view camera defect.
