A Propecia sexual dysfunction lawsuit has been filed by a Florida resident who claims that the male pattern baldness treatment left him with permanent sexual dysfunction. The plaintiff argues that he was not adequately warned of potential sexual side effects by Merck, the maker of Propecia.
Plaintiff Lee S. claims that prior to his Propecia prescription he did not suffer from sexual dysfunction or cognitive impairment. Lee contends that the adverse Propecia side effects continued even after he stopped using the hair loss drug.
The Propecia lawsuit accuses Merck of downplaying risks of Propecia side effects, including permanent sexual dysfunction during and after discontinuation of the hair loss treatment.
Lee is joining the Propecia multidistrict litigation (MDL) pending in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
FDA Issues Propecia Warning
Since it was first launched in the United States more than 17 years ago, Propecia has been used by millions of men. Merck states that the hair loss solution can improve symptoms of male pattern baldness by up to 30 percent within six months.
In 2012 the FDA revised the product label to include warnings of adverse side effects that can last even after cessation of the drug.
The Propecia label now cautions of the following side effects:
- Ejaculation problems
- Lowered sex drive
- Orgasm difficulties
- Sexual dysfunction
- Poor semen quality
Propecia Lawsuits
For the thousands of Propecia users, like Lee, who are now seeking legal recourse for sexual dysfunction problems they never had before, this FDA product label update occurred too late. While the drug remains effective in preventing or reversing hair loss, it also can cause serious sexual side effects.
To date, over 1,100 men across the country have filed Propecia lawsuits against Merck seeking compensation for these complications.
The Propecia MDL was created in April 2012 to more efficiently handle a growing number of complaints with similar accusations. Plaintiffs contend that Merck knew, or should have known, that when taken as prescribed, the male pattern baldness treatment could cause sexual dysfunction, reduced libido, impotence, and other permanent sexual problems.
This Propecia Lawsuit is Case No: 1:15-cv-01600-JG-VVP and joins the larger Propecia MDL In Re: Propecia (Finasteride) Product Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2331, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
