Fairmont Federal Credit Union has revealed a significant data breach that compromised the personal information of more than 187,000 individuals.
The data breach, which was discovered in January 2024, exposed sensitive details, such as names, PINs and healthcare data, with attackers having accessed the data nearly two years prior.
The breach was uncovered when FFCU submitted information to the Maine Attorney General’s Office on Sept. 11, 2025, indicating that attackers had infiltrated the credit union’s systems between Sept. 30 and Oct. 18, 2023.
The breach notice stated that the attackers could use the stolen data for malicious activities, such as medical identity theft and targeted phishing attacks.
FFCU breach exposes sensitive data, risks identity theft
The breach at Fairmont Federal Credit Union has left thousands of individuals vulnerable to identity theft and financial fraud.
The attackers accessed a comprehensive list of personal information, including full names, birth dates, Social Security numbers and addresses, as well as passport and driver’s license numbers. Additionally, financial account numbers, credit card details and health insurance information were compromised.
The breach coincides with an attack by the now-defunct Black Basta ransomware group, although FFCU has not specified the type of cyberattack involved.
Despite the extensive data exposure, FFCU has stated that it is not aware of any incidents of identity theft or financial fraud resulting from the breach. The credit union is offering complimentary identity theft prevention services to affected individuals as a precautionary measure.
Individuals with questions concerning the breach can call 1-888-562-7091. The hotline is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
FFCU says it has not received any reports of identity theft or financial fraud related to the breach so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the breach, but Top Class Actions follows such incidents closely as they sometimes lead to a class action lawsuit.
Recently, TransUnion was hit with a class action lawsuit when personal and financial information of more than 4 million individuals was allegedly compromised in a data breach in July.
