Facebook Harm Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Ohio Public Employees Retirement System has filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms, Inc. f/k/a Facebook, Inc.
  • Why: The plaintiff alleges the company knowingly exploited children to drive corporate profits.
  • Where: The lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

Facebook, recently renamed “Meta,” faces more legal action, this time a lawsuit filed by Ohio Attorney General David Yost on behalf of the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System.

The suit, like many others, claims Facebook engaged in an egregious breach of public trust by knowingly exploiting its most vulnerable users—children—to drive corporate profits, a new lawsuit claims.

Facebook repeatedly misrepresented to investors and the public that its products do not harm children, that the company takes aggressive and effective measures to stop the spread of harmful content and that it applies its standards of behavior equally to all users, the lawsuit states.

However, Facebook investors recently learned the truth when Frances Haugen, former Facebook employee turned whistleblower, came forward with internal documents showing that the defendants were aware that Facebook’s platforms facilitate dissention, illegal activity and violent extremism and cause significant harm to users, especially children, but Facebook refused to correct these issues.

The Ohio AG’s office filed a similar suit in October, but it stated “an incorrect time period in which the harm by Facebook’s actions occurred.”

Facebook Facing Mounting Litigation

Also in October, Facebook was hit with allegations that it harmed investors by filing misleading annual financial reports with the Securities Exchange Commission and making false statements about its internal operations.

In recent months, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “deep involvement” with the Cambridge Analytica data harvesting scandal also prompted a Washington DC Attorney General to add him as a defendant in a pending lawsuit.

The plaintiffs are represented by Jonathan D. Uslaner, Hannah Ross, Avi Josefson and Scott R. Foglietta of Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossman LLP and Shawn Busken of the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Ohio.

The Facebook Harm Lawsuit is Ohio Public Employees Retirement System v. Meta Platforms, Inc., Case No. 3:21-cv-08812, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

I use my daughter’s pic for my profile. I had a man contact me thinking he was speaking to my 9 1/2 yo saying she was pretty, he wanted to be friends and asking for more pics. I reported him to META and was told he didn’t violate guidelines. I have filed a report with NOMEC and the CPD. The gentleman is still active on Instagram.
