A Miami Gardens, Fla. resident recently suffered severe burns after her exploding pressure cooker spewed its scalding contents onto her body, a Local 10 News article out of Florida states.
Maria K. was apparently cooking rice and beans in her pressure cooker when the exploding pressure cooker caused her injuries, according to a relative of the woman. Maria’s neighbors told the news outlet that they heard her screaming outside of her home. The neighbors helped Maria with her wounds as she waited on emergency help that she had already called.
The 37-year-old mother was taken by helicopter to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she stayed and was said to be in good condition. It was expected that she would recover from her injuries.
Local 10 News also reports that this exploding pressure cooker incident was not the only one reported in the last few years. In 2015 in South Florida, doctors had to amputate the leg of a two-year-old girl following burns that covered 60% of her body that had been linked to an exploding pressure cooker.
What Causes an Exploding Pressure Cooker?
Pressure cookers are common kitchen appliances used by many families to prepare a quick and easy meal that is moist and tender. The appliance works by trapping steam inside the unit under a great deal of pressure. With the increased pressure, the cooking temperature inside the unit reaches past the boiling point of water, going up to 250°F, which quickly cooks the contents inside.
A number of different incidents have been reported relating to exploding pressure cookers. Some individuals have unplugged the unit and have waited the appropriate amount of time as instructed by the user’s manual. Yet the appliance was still under a great deal of pressure, so when the lid was opened, the contents exploded out of the appliance and on to nearby individuals.
Other times, the pressure cooker has been reported to explode separately from having the lid released. The exploding pressure cooker forced the lid off of the appliance, spewing the internal contents with it.
Victims of exploding pressure cooker appliances have experienced minor to severe personal injuries, including second and third burns on vast areas of the body. In the case of the two-year-old previously mentioned, the pressure cooker accident led to a limb amputation.
Property damage has occurred as well. One woman said that the steam from the pressure cooker was so hot that when she opened the appliance, it caused the glass on her oven door to explode. Other kitchen damage has been noted as well.
