A Georgia man has filed an Exactech Optetrak lawsuit against the manufacturing company, alleging the defective knee implant had caused him major injuries. According to the Exactech Optetrak lawsuit, the claimant had required revision surgery on both of his knees due to knee implant complications.
Plaintiff Bradley S. says he underwent bilateral knee replacement surgery in both his knees, using the Exactech Optetrak knee replacement system. Bradley agreed to use the medical device after discussing the option with his orthopedic physician and reviewing Exactech marketing materials.
During this time, Bradly claims, he did not notice any warnings or indications of potential knee replacement complications. Bradley had the Optetrake knee replacement system implanted in both of his knees for typical treatment purposes–namely, to restore movement and function in deteriorating knees.
In addition, Bradley had followed all medical instructions from the orthopedic surgeons as to help further along his recovery. Even with this diligence, Bradley still allegedly suffered serious knee implant complications that forced him to seek treatment.
According to the Exactech Optetrak lawsuit, Bradley required revision surgery on both of his knees to explant and replace the devices. Bradley opted to file the Exactech Optetrak lawsuit after discovering there may have been numerous other patients who allegedly suffered similar complications.
Overview of Exactech Optetrak Complications
Exactech is one of several manufacturing companies that have issued recalls over their knee replacement implants. Over four million Americans have undergone knee replacement surgery, but that number has reportedly risen in recent years due to patients needing to undergo revision surgery to replace the allegedly defective devices.
Exactech and other knee replacement system manufacturing companies have been linked to serious complications, with patients reporting side effects including:
- Pain
- Mobility Problems
- Swelling
- Instability Issues
- Infections
- Fractures
- Implant Disassociation
- Inflammation
- Implant Loosening
- Component Position Changes Change
- Patello-Femoral Tracking-Lateral Release (kneecap moving out of place)
The FDA had received device failure reports regarding the Exactech Optetrak knee replacement system, which reported that different device components were prematurely failing. These component problems reportedly stemmed from tibial insert wear and tear in the device.
According to a recent study published in Orthopaedics & Traumatology: Surgery & Research, researchers examined Exactech Optetrak knees in 106 patients and looked after the patients for 25 months after the knee replacement surgery.
Researchers noted that many of the reported knee replacement problems were due to device fragmentation and wear of the plastic insert. Even though Exactech may have known about these knee replacement problems for years, they allegedly failed to warn the general public.
Bradley opted to file the Exactech Optetrak lawsuit, alleging numerous claims including negligence and failure to warn. He claims the company failed to properly warn him and his physician about the possibility of device failure.
Bradley states that he never would have opted for the Exactech Optetrak knee replacement system if he had known about the high rates of revision surgery.
This Exactech Optetrak Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-00200-RWS, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Gainesville Division.
