Essure, a popular permanent birth control method, has been seen by many to be a wonderful alternative to other forms of birth control.
However, many women suffer severe Essure problems including extreme pain, bleeding and even miscarriage as a result of the device.
What is Essure?
Essure is a permanent, non-surgical form of birth control that is manufactured and marketed by Bayer HealthCare.
It is often utilized as an alternative to tubal ligation for women who choose to become permanently sterile.
Upon release, Essure was considered a breakthrough treatment and many women have opted for the procedure.
Sadly, however, many women who have chosen this option have reported serious Essure problems.
These Essure side effects range from bloating, rashes and allergic reactions, all the way to excessive bleeding, organ perforation, pelvic pain, miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies.
Most women claim that neither they, nor their physicians, were warned about the serious risks associated with the birth control device.
Essure was originally manufactured by Conceptus, and then later was purchased by Bayer.
It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002 under a fast-review system. It is the only non-surgical method of permanent sterilization for women.
As opposed to tubal ligation, the Essure procedure has a much faster recovery time.
During the implantation procedure, non-surgical in nature and usually performed vaginally, two flexible metal and polyester coils are placed inside each fallopian tube.
Over time, tissue begins to grow around the coils and blocks conception. After several months, women who have the Essure device implanted are permanently sterile and will no longer be able to get pregnant. However, they must be evaluated by a doctor to confirm their sterility.
Essure Problems
Even though Essure has been thought to be an viable option for permanent, non-surgical birth control, over 4,500 adverse event reports have been filed with the FDA since its approval. Since its inception, about 750,000 women have used Essure.
These adverse events include the perforation of the fallopian tube as well as severe pain. Deaths have even been reported as a result of Essure problems.
In September 2015, a meeting was held by the FDA to examine the safety of Essure after the thousands of adverse event reports
. The FDA noted that it had found 20,000 complaints from women who had shared their Essure problems on social media.
Also, the FDA reported an increase in reported adverse Essure events in the last two years.
Initial Essure studies followed 677 women who used the device and in the first year after implantation.
They reported the following Essure symptoms: abdominal cramps, bloating, back pain, arm and leg pain, headaches, severe cramps, painful intercourse, abnormal bleeding and vaginal infection.
Other studies show much more severe side effects, and up to nine deaths including four women and five fetuses have been reported as a result of Essure problems.
