Nearly one hundred plaintiffs have joined together to file an Essure birth control problems lawsuit against Bayer HealthCare.
To be exact, ninety-four female plaintiffs, ranging in ages, share similar stories about the Essure birth control problems they have experienced.
Essure Birth Control
Essure is a permanent, non-surgical birth control device that seems like a great alternative to tubal ligation for women of childbearing age. Before Essure was approved, the only permanent sterilization option for women was tubal ligation.
When Essure was approved in 2002 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration through a fast track program, it was seen as innovative and a much easier procedure than tubal ligation.
The Essure birth control system is two small metal coils that are placed inside each fallopian tube. Over time, the fallopian tubes of the patient grow tissue around the coils and block the tubes. After a few months, the woman must see her doctor who checks to make sure she is truly sterile.
This procedure can all be done vaginally and is considered just as effective as tubal ligation. The drug makers have even claimed that Essure is safer than tubal ligation.
However, many women, such as the women in this Essure birth control problems lawsuit, have suffered serious complications from the device.
Essure Birth Control Problems
The Essure birth control problems that many women complain they suffer from include bloating, rashes, allergic reactions, excessive bleeding, organ perforation, pelvic pain, miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy.
Many women, who suffer from Essure birth control problems, claim that neither their doctors nor they themselves were aware of the serious side effects possible with the medical device.
The women in this Essure birth control problems lawsuit share similar stories. For example, one plaintiff, Kelly M., is 44 years old. She was implanted with the Essure birth control device in 2012.
However, she alleges that not long after her procedure, she began to suffer “severe pain and discomfort, including heavy menstrual bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, chronic back pain, abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, excessive hair loss, dental problems, excessive weight gain, and chronic fatigue.”
She claims that before she was implanted with Essure, she never experienced any of these Essure birth control problems.
Another woman, 44-year-old plaintiff Jennifer C., says she had the Essure birth control system implanted in 2012 as well. She claims that after her procedure, she experienced severe pain and discomfort including heavy menstrual bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, chronic back pain, abdominal bloating and chronic fatigue.
Jennifer was advised in 2016 to have the Essure coils removed via surgery to help alleviate her symptoms.
Additionally, plaintiff Sarah S. says she was implanted with the Essure device in 2009. Because of her Essure birth control problems including “severe pain and discomfort, including chronic pelvic pain, chronic back pain, abdominal bloating, autoimmune disease diagnoses, and chronic fatigue,” she was forced to undergo a partial hysterectomy.
This Essure birth control problems lawsuit is bringing forth many causes of action including negligence, negligence per se, failure to warn, manufacturing defect, violation of consumer protection laws, and several more.
This Essure Birth Control Problems Lawsuit is Case No. 4:17-cv-01915-RLW in the Circuit Court of the City of St. Louis, Missouri.
