laparoscopic surgery morcellation laparoscopic surgeryMore medical professionals are warning against the user of power morcellators after a growing number of women suffered from morcellator cancer in the wake of a hysterectomy or similar laparoscopic surgery. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggests that women who wish to undergo a hysterectomy using a power morcellator should consider other options for the surgery.

Previously, the FDA also warned against the use of power morcellators. Beginning in April 2014, the agency recommended that doctors avoid morcellator use if possible. In November of the same year, a black box warning was added on all power morcellator devices that had not yet been recalled. These actions were taken because the power morcellator device that was supposed to be a less invasive form of surgery caused cancer calls to spread throughout the body.

Power Morcellator Cancer

Women who opt for morcellation surgery usually do so in order to have their uterus, ovaries, or uterine fibroids removed. The device enters the body through a small slit made in the abdomen, where it can then cut and remove the surgical tissue. This approach was designed to be less invasive than a traditional hysterectomy and allows for a shorter recovery time.

However, many women have undiagnosed cancer in their uterus. When the morcellator enters the body, it can shred the cancer cells that were previously contained and spread them throughout the abdomen and rest of the body. It was suggested by the FDA that one out of every 350 women who has undergone laparoscopic surgery with a morcellator had undiagnosed cancer.

As time has gone on, the dangers of using power morcellators has become clear, as more and more women were diagnosed with cancer. Many manufacturers have chosen to recall the devices as a result of these adverse event reports. It was estimated that 50,000 women undergo surgery with power morcellators every year. This means that thousands of women have undergone surgery without being aware that they could develop morcellator cancer.

Morcellator Cancer Lawsuit

Many women who underwent a hysterectomy and were later diagnosed with morcellator cancer have decided to file a morcellator cancer lawsuit against the manufacturers. Plaintiffs have alleged that the manufacturers failed to warn against these potentially dangerous power morcellator side effects. Additionally, many medical professionals have already claimed that they will not perform gynecological surgery with power morcellators due to the risk of morcellator cancer.

Women who have undergone the following surgeries with a power morcellator may be entitled to compensation:

  • myomectomy (removal of fibroids)
  • hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
  • oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries)
  • salpingectomy (removal of fallopian tubes)

A power morcellator lawsuit may help a victim win compensation for their medical bills, loss of earnings, loss of consortium (if applicable), and for the pain and suffering caused by this dangerous device. Power morcellator lawsuits may be filed against Ethicon, Blue Endo, Karl Storz and more.
