Dietary Sources of CoQ10 May Help Consumers Avoid Supplement Issues
By John Curran
The craze over CoQ10 supplements ignores one very simple fact about the enzyme and what Americans need to do to ensure that they receive CoQ10 benefits like lowering their high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and their risk for diabetes. Medical researchers note that the average American diet should already include enough of this essential coenzyme that people do not need a dietary supplement to obtain CoQ10 benefits.
This is an important fact because there are ongoing investigations into whether or not certain Coenzyme 10 supplement manufacturers have misrepresented the relative efficacy of their products – in particular, that their supplement offers better absorption. CoQ10 is sold in liquid gel form, pill form, and other types of packaging. Research regarding which one of these provides the most benefits, however, has either been performed on a very small scale or has not proven a substantial difference.
If one does look for CoQ10 supplements, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends the coenzyme for some conditions like gum disease, diabetes and following heart surgery. However, it should be taken with a meal that is high in fat and in soft gel form.
In addition, most doctors and healthcare professionals say that the best way to ensure vitamin and/or enzyme absorption is to do so as part of one’s regular diet. In that case, one can increase his or her consumption of oily fish like salmon and tuna as well as beef and chicken hearts. Vegetarians can avoid using CoQ10 supplements by increasing the amount of avocados they eat in various recipes as well as significantly increase in the amount of whole grains they consume.
Some Americans may not have realized, however, that they were already getting a substantial amount of coenzyme Q10 from natural food sources. Marketing claims that a CoQ10 supplement will offer better absorption of the coenzyme are not always backed up by science, therefore making these labeling claims false.
Men and women who think that they were subject to false or misleading advertising from manufacturers that misrepresented the absorption of coenzyme Q10 may want to consider consulting with consumer product lawyer to decide what their next steps should take.
