A Nevada woman has recently filed an Invokana drug side effects lawsuit claiming that she suffered from diabetic ketoacidosis as a result of taking the type-2 diabetes drug.
Plaintiff Elizabeth T. of Nevada says she began taking Invokana for her type-2 diabetes in April 2016 and continued for just a couple months until June 2016.
Invokana is a SGLT2 inhibitor. Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat type-2 diabetes by helping to lower blood sugar when coupled with proper diet and exercise.
Invokana works by allowing the kidneys to remove sugar from the body by expelling it through the urine. It stops the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose and increases insulin or insulin sensitivity. By inhibiting a specific protein known as SGLT2, it stops the absorption of 90% of glucose in the kidneys.
Unfortunately, Elizabeth’s Invokana drug side effects included diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition in which there is increased levels of acid in the blood. Specifically, when a patient suffers from diabetic ketoacidosis, the body makes a higher than normal amount of ketones, which are blood acids. These ketones can accumulate in the body creating a dangerous situation for the patient.
Some symptoms to watch out for if a patient suspects he or she might be suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis include difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, confusion and unusual levels of fatigue or sleepiness.
Other less serious Invokana drug side effects include low blood sugar, kidney problems, urinary tract infections, fatigue, yeast infections, dehydration and thirst, increased cholesterol and increased urination.
Elizabeth believes that her Invokana drug side effects were “preventable and resulted directly from [Janssen’s] failure and refusal to conduct proper safety studies, failure to properly assess and publicize alarming safety signals, suppression of information revealing serious and life-threatening risks, willful and wanton failure to provide adequate instructions, and willful misrepresentations concerning the nature and safety of Invokana.”
She also asserts that if she had known about the severe Invokana drug side effects associated with the drug including diabetic ketoacidosis, she would not have chosen to take Inovkana.
This Invokana drug side effects lawsuit claims that the drug makers, “through their affirmative misrepresentations and omissions, actively concealed from [Elizabeth] and her physicians the true and significant risks” connected with taking the drug, including diabetic ketoacidosis.
The plaintiff has endured pain and suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, as well as economic loss and significant expenses in medical costs including treatment in the future.
This diabetic ketoacidosis lawsuit is bringing forth claims of manufacturing defect, defective design, failure to warn, breach of express warranty, breach of warranty of fitness for ordinary use, negligence, breach of implied warranty, fraudulent misrepresentation, negligent misrepresentation, fraudulent concealment and fraud.
This Invokana Drug Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-08388-BRM-LHG in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.
In general, Invokana and Invokamet lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
