DePuy ASR hip implant hip replacement coupleA growing number of patients who have undergone revision surgery due to problems with their DePuy ASR hip implant are filing lawsuits, alleging that the manufacturer failed to adequately warn of the risk.

A DePuy ASR hip implant settlement cannot reverse the damage done by side effects of a defective implant, but it can provide some financial compensation to help with medical expenses and lost wages.

The DePuy ASR Hip Implant

Hip replacement surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures in the United States; more than half a million Americans have gotten a hip implant so far.

Many of these surgeries may have taken place using a type of device known as a metal-on-metal hip implant—that is, a kind of device that has two metal components that connect. Metal-on-metal devices, like the DePuy ASR hip implant, are certainly popular, but they carry with them significant risks.

Side Effects of the DePuy ASR Hip Implant

Unfortunately, patients have reported a number of major problems after implantation with a DePuy ASR hip implant device. Some have reported device dislocation, tissue death, metallosis, cancer, degenerative heart disease, or device failure that requires early replacement.

More and more patients have begun filing lawsuits over these and other complications. So far, thousands of lawsuits have been leveled against DePuy. Some cases have not gone to trial but ended in a DePuy ASR hip implant settlement.

Essentially, a DePuy ASR hip implant settlement is an agreement between both parties to bring an end to the litigation. While a DePuy ASR hip implant settlement does not indicate liability on the part of the defendant, it often ends in a substantial award. The first group of lawsuits to settle reached a DePuy ASR hip implant settlement of $600,000.

DePuy ASR Hip Implant Recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of the DePuy ASR hip implant device back in August 2010, which affected around 93,000 total hip implant devices across the world. Around 37,000 of these devices were distributed within the United States.

Thousands of Americans may still be implanted with the device, putting them at risk for future complications that the FDA warned about years ago.

A UK study of the DePuy device found that about 13 percent of patients with DePuy ASR implants are eventually forced to undergo hip revision surgery due to injuries or complications. Revision surgery can present serious risk of infection or further device failure, as well as significant medical expenses.

Pursuing a DePuy ASR Hip Implant Settlement

Those who have been forced to undergo a hip revision surgery after being implanted with a DePuy device may be able to pursue a DePuy ASR hip implant settlement.

Lawsuits allege that DePuy failed to adequately warn both the public and the medical community about the risks associated with their device. According to lawsuits, had plaintiffs known about the risks linked with the DePuy hip implant device, they would have chosen a safer alternative and avoided these complications completely.

If you or someone you love has experienced complications due to a metal-on-metal hip replacement implant from DePuy or another company, you may be able to file a metal hip implant failure lawsuit. Patients eligible for a DePuy ASR hip implant settlement include those who have had hip implant surgery since March 2015.
