invokana-defectsTwo injured women have filed lawsuits over Invokana defects against Janssen, a subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson.

California plaintiff Valerie R. and Nevada plaintiff Denise G. claim that, due to taking the Janssen drug, they have suffered from a number of significant Invokana defects.

Valerie began taking Invokana in January 2013 and Denise in January 2015 to treat diabetes, believing the company’s claims that it was both safe and effective.

She developed a number of serious problems due to Invokana defects, including diabetic ketoacidosis, stroke, and stage 3 kidney failure. Valerie’s kidney failure led to hospitalization.

Denise also suffered from major complications due to Invokana defects, including diabetic ketoacidosis.

The plaintiffs claim that they were unaware that the drug was associated with serious Invokana defects such as diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney problems, and amputations.

Indeed, the lawsuit claims, the plaintiffs did not know about these Invokana defects because Janssen Pharmaceuticals failed to adequately warn about such problems, even going so far as to promote the drug as safe and effective despite knowledge to the contrary.

The Invokana defects lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including strict products liability, negligence, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, and negligent misrepresentation, among others.

Invokana Basics

Invokana (also known as canagliflozin, its generic name) was first introduced to the drug market in 2013 and is manufactured by Janssen Pharmacetuicals, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson.

Invokana is one of several major diabetes drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2, or SGLT2 inhibitors. SGLT2 inhibitor drugs like Invokana make up a fairly new class of diabetes drugs, but have grown rapidly in popularity.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received a growing number of adverse event reports regarding the drug, and has required Janssen to add a series of warnings to the Invokana label about severe Invokana defects and injuries.

The warning urged users to be aware of diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms like abdominal pain, fatigue, nausea, respiratory problems, and vomiting.

Invokana Complications

Invokana has been linked with a number of serious side effects, from Invokana heart attack to kidney failure to diabetic ketoacidosis.

Invokana is associated with a number of side effects, including, but not limited to:

  • Dehydration (dizziness, lightheadedness)
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Yeast infection of the penis
  • Low blood sugar
  • Serious allergic reaction
  • Kidney problems, including kidney failure

According to this lawsuit, Janssen Pharmaceuticals actively minimized risks and overplayed the drug as safe and effective, despite known reports of severe Invokana injuries.

Filing a Lawsuit over Severe Invokana Defects

Invokana lawsuits claim that the drug makers failed to adequately warn about Invokana defects and, in some cases, claim that the company actively withheld information about Invokana risks from both the medical community and the general public.

If you or someone you love has suffered due to severe Invokana injuries like a stroke, you may be able to file a lawsuit.

While filing a lawsuit cannot reverse the side effects of Invokana, including severe Invokana injuries, pursuing an Invokana lawsuit could result in financial compensation that would help with medical expenses and lost wages.

The Invokana Defects Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-00114-DMS-JLB, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

In general, Invokana lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
