da Vinci Robot lawsuit

One woman says she thought she was “going to die” after a da Vinci robotic hysterectomy surgery went wrong.

Sometimes, we may find ourselves under the impression that we are living in the future. Technology that once populated the pages of science fiction has become increasingly commonplace, and we rely on phones with more capabilities than Star Trek communicators. But sometimes, cutting-edge technologies can have bugs to work out. When such futuristic technology is applied to human medicine, these “bugs” can prove life-threatening.

The da Vinci Surgical System is designed to allow surgeons to operate with greater precision. The “robot” translates human commands into much smaller movements, increasing precision. Designers of the surgical robot intended surgeons to use the device to operate under minimally invasive conditions. Ideally, this procedure would translate to shorter recovery times and less pain during recovery. However, evidence has begun to surface that the machine can lead to serious robotic surgery complications.

According to an article posted to MSN, a California resident name Michelle Zarick experienced shocking complications from robotic hysterectomy surgery performed by the da Vinci robot. After surgeons used the da Vinci machine to perform a hysterectomy with the device, she felt a popping sensation somewhere inside of her while using the restroom, and then realized that part of her small intestines had fallen out of her vagina. According to statements she made to Bloomberg News, she believed that she was about to die. Zarick required massive reconstructive surgery to repair the damage allegedly caused by the initial da Vinci robotic hysterectomy. A review by Bloomberg News found dozens of reports of deaths linked to the da Vinci Surgical System.

Some critics, including sources cited in an article by The New York Times have stated that at present, robot surgical tools like the da Vinci System are not worth the money.  These critics assert that the technology is largely unproven, and may not be worth the substantial price tag. Indeed, the da Vinci System cost $2 million up front, with up to several hundred thousand dollars in maintenance fees. Critics argue that this type of technology is being fielded at breakneck speed, despite the fact that there is no evidence it is superior to older, more tested procedures.

At least 50 da Vinci robot lawsuits have been filed against the manufactures of the da Vinci Surgical System. These da Vinci robot lawsuits allege that surgical procedures by the da Vinci machine have caused them to suffer from botched procedures, resulting in death, disability and pain. Both patients and their surviving family members have filed such lawsuits. Additionally, a class action lawsuit investigation has been launched to explore the possibility of a group lawsuit like a class action lawsuit or multidistrict litigation (MDL).
