Pfizer Inc. was hit with another Lipitor lawsuit by a Tennessee couple who alleges that the heart disease drug causes type-2 diabetes.
Plaintiffs Rebecca B. and Ronald B. joined an ongoing Lipitor MDL last week over the alleged link between the cholesterol medication and the development of type-2 diabetes.
Lipitor type-2 diabetes side effects have allegedly been experienced by hundreds of individuals across the country. Pfizer may be held liable for failing to warn that Lipitor could cause this life-long illness.
Rebecca, 58, began using Lipitor in December 1999 and continued using the drug until September 2009. In 2003, she was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, a condition that can be managed but never fully cured. The Lipitor lawsuit claims that this diagnosis was a direct result of her Lipitor use.
The Lipitor MDL continued to state that because of Pfizer’s actions or inactions, Rebecca “suffered grievous bodily injury and consequently economic and other losses, including but not limited to pain and suffering, emotional distress and loss of enjoyment of life.”
Claims in this Lipitor lawsuit includes negligence, negligent misrepresentation, negligent design, design defect, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, fraud and misrepresentation, constructive fraud, and unjust enrichment.
Ronald also joined in his Rebecca’s Lipitor type-2 diabetes claims stating that Lipitor caused him to suffer from loss of consortium or loss of intimacy with a spouse.
Lipitor Type-2 Diabetes
Many Lipitor patients may not be aware that their diabetes was caused by Lipitor. It was not until 2012 that the FDA required Pfizer to change the warning label to include the diabetes side effects.
This label warning followed a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine that showed women between the ages of 50 and 79 were almost 50 percent more likely to develop type-2 diabetes if they took Lipitor or other statin drugs.
While a Lipitor user’s preexisting cholesterol condition may be a risk factor, this and other risk factors were taken into account for the statistic given at the end of the study.
Lipitor type-2 diabetes can force patients to make serious lifestyle and diet changes. Symptoms of Lipitor type-2 diabetes may include:
- Increased thirst
- Dry mouth
- Increased hunger (especially after eating)
- Frequent urination
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Slow-healing sores or frequent infections
- Areas of darkened skin
- Headaches
Rebecca is not the only Lipitor user to allegedly develop Lipitor type-2 diabetes during or after taking the drug. Multiple Lipitor lawsuits have been filed, and many have been consolidated into a Lipitor MDL.
This Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuit MDL is MDL No. 2:14-cv-2219, in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, Charleston Division.
