Patients are seeking out their own Onglyza lawyer, after the medication allegedly caused them to suffer cardiac complications or other life threatening side effects.
Even with the current litigation, legal experts may warn their potential clients that there is mixed success with these lawsuits and that they need to cooperate with their Onglyza lawyer to maximize chances of success.
According to the Form 20-F issued by AstraZeneca PLC to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, which details its fiscal year ending on Dec. 31, 2016, Onglyza lawsuits from 14 plaintiffs were dismissed. These Onglyza lawyers alleged the medication directly caused them to suffer cardiac failure or death.
Onglyza cardiac damages are not the only claims facing problems, as a federal California judge dismissed another 14 Onglyza lawsuits alleging pancreatic complications. The judge granted AstraZeneca’s motion for summary judgment, even though the FDA mandated Onglyza and similar medications have pancreatitis added to the warnings and precautions of the drug’s labels.
It is not currently known why AstraZeneca had requested for summary judgment, but many critics allege it was to protect Onglyza’s market value. Onglyza had reached sales over $786 million in 2015, with experts predicting sales to balloon to $2.47 billion in sales soon.
Even with this financial success, pharmaceutical companies are required to disclose potential side effects.
Overview of Onglyza Heart Failure Correlation
Onglyza was approved by the FDA in July 2009 and is a popular option for type-2 diabetes treatment. Onglyza is a part of the incretin mimetics drug family, which works by signaling the pancreas to increase insulin production. This helps regulate blood sugar levels, and assists with the patient’s metabolic process.
Even though this drug helps regulate blood sugar levels, this medication has been serious complications relating to the heart and pancreas. Onglyza has not been proven to cause heart failure, but there have been several studies that have initiated concern with the FDA.
These studies consist of two large 2013 clinical trials: Saxagliptin Assessment of Vascular Outcomes Recorded in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus–Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction 53, a study known as SAVOR-TIMI 53, and Examination of Cardiovascular Outcomes with Alogliptin versus Standard of Care (EXAMINE).
The SAVOR study had observed 16,492 Onglyza patients, and reportedly found a 27% increased risk of heart failure. The EXAMINE study had analyzed 5,380 patients, and had found that 3.9% of Onglyza patients had to be hospitalized for heart failure.
In addition, researchers have found a 27% increased risk of hospitalization for Onglyza patients, attributed to Onglyza heart problems. These studies had spurred the FDA to recommend label changes to Onglyza in April 2015, advising doctors to warn patients against potential Onglyza heart failure.
Even with recent setbacks of Onglyza heart failure, patients are continuing to seek out their own Onglyza lawyer to evaluate their options. Patients who may have been hospitalized for heart failure soon after starting Onglyza should contact an Onglyza lawyer to discuss eligibility for legal action.
In general, Onglyza lawsuits and Kombiglyze XR lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
