The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) is convening a group of experts to discuss the risk of using diabetes medications including Invokana.
The conference, slated to take place in the fall, was convened in response to a adverse reports from Invokana users and other new generation diabetes drug developing ketoacidosis.
The upcoming diabetes medication conference by AACE will bring together experts from around the world to discuss the risks of diabetic ketoacidosis associated with type-2 diabetes drugs like Invokana. Diabetic ketoacidosis is generally associated with type-1 diabetes patients, and is rarely seen in type-2 diabetes sufferers, leading to concern with this condition’s link to use of new generation diabetic drugs.
Ketoacidosis occurs when ketones (also known as blood acids) build up in a person’s blood, raising it to dangerously high levels of acidity. This condition can cause painful symptoms such as trouble breathing, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, fatigue, and sleepiness. Those suffering from ketoacidosis generally require immediate medical attention, as some diabetic ketoacidosis side effects can be life-threatening.
AACE Diabetic Medications Conference
The AACE is comprised of over 6,000 medical professionals who treat diabetes patients. In preparation for this conference, participating AACE experts will examine FDA data and other recent diabetes medication studies in order to give the medical community and diabetic patients informed recommendations regarding the use of these types of drugs and the ketoacidosis risks.
In a press release regarding the conference, AACE President Dr. George Grunberger states:
“AACE’s responsibility to its members and their diabetes patients is to conduct a complete, objective and balanced evaluation of the data and investigate any knowledge gaps before issuing our recommendations. There are still unanswered questions to answer before we draw any definitive conclusions on the subject, and that is what this conference is designed to do.”
Invokana Complications and Lawsuits
Since Invokana was approved for the U.S. drug market, reports about observed and potential Invokana side effects and complications raised the risks outweigh the potential benefits to diabetes sufferers.
In addition to ketoacidosis, other diabetes medication complications associated with Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors include kidney failure and heart attack/heart failure.
If you took a diabetes medication like Invokana and developed ketoacidosis or other side effects, you should consult with an attorney to determine if you should file a diabetes medication lawsuit.
In general, diabetes medication lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
