VW, Audi class action lawsuitJust about everyone who owns a Volkswagen or Audi with a sunroof manufactured within the past 13 years is included in a class action lawsuit.

The class action suit claims manufacturing defects cause the sunroof in certain VW and Audi models to leak and cause water damage. If the proposed class action settlement is approved, owners will be reimbursed for water damage and repairs to fix the leaky sunroof. They will also be able to bring in their cars for free inspections and repairs even if their sunroof hasn’t leaked yet. As a result of the lawsuit, Volkswagen and Audi have already changed some of the parts used to build the sunroofs and have included instructions in the maintenance guidelines so that cars that are brought in for a scheduled service at the dealer are automatically checked for any clogged drain lines.

The class action lawsuit covers hundreds of thousands of cars manufactured between 1997 and 2009. You’re included in the class action if:

(1) You purchased or leased (new or used) one of the following vehicles:

2001-2007 Volkswagen New Beetle equipped with sunroof (VIN below 3VW—1C-7M514779)
2001-2007 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan or Wagon equipped with sunroof
2001-2007 Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen GTI equipped with sunroof
1999-2005 Volkswagen Passat.
1997-2006 Audi A4 B5 and B6 Platforms (including Cabrio, S and RS versions).
1998-2005 Audi A6 C5 Platform (including Allroad, S and RS versions)

Or, (2) You’re a current owner or leaser of one of the following vehicles:

1998-2000 and 2007-2009 Volkswagen New Beetle equipped with sunroof (VIN 3VW—1C-7M514779 or higher)
1997-2000, and 2008-2009 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan or Wagon equipped with sunroof
1997-2000 Volkswagen Golf/GTI and 2008 – 2009 Volkswagen Golf/GTI equipped with sunroof
1997 and 2006-2009 Volkswagen Passat equipped with sunroof
1998 Volkswagen Passat
2004-2009 Volkswagen Touareg
2005-2008 Audi A4 B7 equipped with sunroof (including S and RS versions)
1997 and 2005-2009 Audi A6 C6 platform equipped with sunroof (including S and RS versions)
1997-2009 Audi A8 (including S versions)

The deadline to submit a claim form for reimbursable repair is July 23, 2010.  To see if you qualify to submit a claim, visit the Class Info page of the Settlement Administrator website and enter your vehicle identification number (“VIN”). If your VIN matches, you’ll be given a link to the appropriate settlement materials that will help you file a claim.

A fairness hearing will be held July 26, 2010, but we’re betting it will be approved since this is a common complaint among VW and Audi owners. 2009 VW Jeta Wagon leaked so bad the spare wheel well had about a foot of water causing a musty odor and dreaded mold. The AC puts out a toxic smell. While driving, the dashboard lights started to flicker off and on causing the car to die while on the freeway, I almost had a heart attack. We since had to put gorilla tape around the sunroof to seal it from leaking and a moisture bucket thing that helps draw the water. The tape comes off after a few months and we replace it over and over again. I called the corporate number and they said I missed out on the fix and that an ad was ran in the USA Today regarding the issue? Who reads the USA today? I will never buy another VW again and if anyone tells me that they are considering it I will beg them get a Subaru. VW = Very Wrong

My 2010 VW Golf Wagon sunroof has been leaking on & off when it rains for the past 2 years. Cost over $1500, they replaced the tubes but then leaked again. They (Clarkdale VW in Vancouver)now say it’s a crack and that they will have to replace the sunroof entirely for over $3K!
Worst car I’ve ever owned for repairs.

My 2015 VW all track car is leaking water into the interior of the car ever time it rains. This was first noticed in 2016. I started my first complaint in 2018 as each time it rained the problem was becoming worse. I have taken the car into VW Sutherland approximately 5 times for review and repair. The car has been in repairs for approximately 18weeks in total. Each time the car is picked up we are informed the problem has been fixed – (blocked tubes causing the leakage) and it will never leak again. I have asked for photo evidence the car has been stripped and new pipes replaced (as stated by the VW Sutherland team), however my request has never been followed through. The problem has never been fixed, as the car continues to leak.
They are now saying I need to have all my services at VW Sutherland so they can clean the drain tubes with a special tool. They will not reply to me regarding what tool to use nor how many time I need to do this ..
I am confused as my car has been with VW Sutherland 5 x in 1.5 years and they have cleaned the tubes however it is still leaking

I have a Tiguan 2018. The sunroof is leaking and I am charged to fix it. It would appear the problem isn’t gone.

    2009 audi a8 have a sun roof k
    Leak.

I have a 2013 GTI. Sunroof tube leaked and cause significant mold growth inside the car. Vw dealership charged us $2k to remove mold. When car was returned to us he mild was NOT removed. We had to bring it back and they admitted they didn’t fix the problem – replace flawed tuning and removal all the mold. Called VW corporate and they said it’s not their problem either. Now dealershio is telling us to pay $9k to fix the car. This is a vw design flaw, not operator error! Same issue as the previous lawsuit but Vw says it’s not their problem. How is this known design issue reoccurring and owner incurring the cost?! VE should not get away with this fraud.

I am trying to fix it myself No more VW for me! Toyota spent $12,000 to replace the frame on my old 2007 Tacoma. Toyota also replaced the front rotors at no charge and installed at n/c the shocks that I bought elsewhere. Bye bye VW. This is the last one that i will ever buy.

  8. Anthony Socci says:

I just paid $950.+ dollars to fix my 2009 Jetta Sportwagen SE sunroof! The first leaky sunroof repair shortly after purchasing the vehicle in 2012 was covered because I had under 80,000 miles. This time I got fleeced! In the future, will deal with independent body repairmen or simply consult a do-it yourself website.
