Coin Master class action overview:

  • Who: Plaintiff Renika Williams filed a class action lawsuit against Moon Active Ltd.
  • Why: The plaintiff claims the company’s Coin Master game is illegal gambling.
  • Where: The Moon Active class action was filed in California federal court.

A new class action lawsuit accuses Moon Active Ltd. of running an illegal gambling operation targeting children through its popular mobile game Coin Master.

Plaintiff Renika Williams filed the class action lawsuit against Moon Active on Feb. 14 in California federal court, alleging violations of state and federal laws.

According to the lawsuit, Coin Master combines village-building with a slot machine mechanic, allowing players to spin a virtual slot machine to earn coins and advance in the game. Once free spins run out, players must either wait for spins to regenerate or spend real money to buy more, the lawsuit says.

Williams claims the game’s cartoonish graphics and colorful interface are designed to appeal to children, making it even more concerning that it contains gambling-like mechanics.

“Coin Master has been downloaded hundreds of millions of times and has generated over $6 billion in gross revenue for Defendant, with the United States accounting for approximately 39% of player spending, or $2.4 billion,” the Coin Master class action lawsuit states

Coin Master targets children, lawsuit alleges

Williams alleges Moon Active aggressively marketed Coin Master to children, using celebrity endorsements and promotions on platforms like YouTube.

She claims the game has been widely criticized for luring children into using gambling-like elements and spending real money on in-game items.

The lawsuit argues that Moon Active’s terms of service misleadingly assure parents that the platform is safe, failing to disclose that the game facilitates illegal child gambling.

Williams says her minor child, like many others, fell victim to the scheme, spending hundreds of dollars on the game.

The plaintiff seeks to represent a nationwide class and a California subclass of all adult persons who are or were the parent and/or legal guardian of a minor who spent money on spins on Coin Master.

The lawsuit alleges violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law (UCL), negligence, negligence per se and unjust enrichment. It seeks monetary damages, restitution and declaratory relief for the proposed class of minor victims.

In 2024, a California federal judge ruled that Roblox must face claims it failed to shield minors from using its gaming platform to gamble. In addition, numerous game-makers are facing allegations that their video games are addicting to children, resulting in health problems such as depression, ADHD and more.
