  • Who: A California man filed a class action lawsuit against vegan meal and supplement company Huel Ltd.
  • Why: The plaintiff claims Huel misrepresents the amount of protein in its Black Edition Vegan Protein Powder.
  • Where: The Huel protein class action lawsuit was filed in California federal court.

A new class action lawsuit claims vegan meal and supplement company Huel Ltd. misrepresents the amount of protein in its Black Edition Vegan Protein Powder.

California-based plaintiff Aykut Sarayli claims Huel misrepresents the protein content of its Black Edition Vegan Protein Powder by featuring deceptive protein values on the front label. These values misrepresented the percentage of the recommended daily value of protein contained in each serving, the case argues.

Sarayli argues Huel fails to disclose that the protein in the Black Edition Vegan Protein Powder is of lower quality and not fully bioavailable to consumers.

“Consumers such as Plaintiff who viewed the Products’ labels reasonably understood the Products to contain 40 grams of fully bioavailable, high-quality protein, comprising 80 percent of the Recommended Daily Value of protein,” the Huel protein class action says.

Huel fails to disclose accurate protein quality, lawsuit claims

Sarayli claims Huel uses pea and rice protein as the sole protein sources in the Black Edition Vegan Protein Powder. He argues these ingredients have a lower protein digestibility corrected amino acid score — a measure of protein quality — than animal-derived proteins such as whey.

Huel thus failed to disclose the corrected amount of protein per serving in the Black Edition Vegan Protein Powder, Sarayli claims. If it had, the total amount of protein usable by the human body would be less than half that claimed on the label, he alleges.

Sarayli wants to represent a California class of consumers who purchased the Black Edition Vegan Protein Powder within the last four years. He argues Huel violated the state’s consumer legal remedies act, was unjustly enriched and breached an express warranty.

Sarayli demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of pre- and post-judgment interest and attorneys’ fees.

In November, Beyond Meat agreed to a $7.5 million class action settlement to resolve allegations that it overstated the protein content and quality of its meatless products.
