A new class action lawsuit alleges that LensCrafters falsely advertises sales on prescription lenses.

Plaintiff Melissa Velasquez filed the class action lawsuit against Luxottica of America Inc. on Dec. 2 in a California state court, alleging violations of state false advertising and consumer laws.

According to the lawsuit, LensCrafters falsely advertises sales of “40% off” or “50% off” the price of prescription lenses if purchased along with a set of frames. However, these sales are continuous and not actually sales, the complaint alleges.

Velasquez claims that LensCrafters falsely and artificially inflates the “retail” prices to increase the supposed discount that its customers are receiving when purchasing frames and lenses.

LensCrafters’ ‘false reference pricing’ misleads consumers on discounts, lawsuit says

The LensCrafters class action lawsuit claims the retailer’s “false reference pricing” scheme is designed to lure consumers into believing they are getting substantial discounts when they are not.

“Through this false reference pricing scheme, Defendants have violated California’s unfair competition and false advertising laws,” the LensCrafters class action says.

Velasquez wants to represent anyone in California who purchased one or more pairs of glasses with lenses advertised as being discounted from the regular price from a LensCrafters store in California or on lenscrafters.com.

She alleges LensCrafters’ false reference pricing scheme violated California’s unfair competition and false advertising laws. The lawsuit seeks certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

LensCrafters has faced similar claims before. In 2023, LensCrafters agreed to a $39 million settlement in a class action lawsuit that claimed the company engaged in deceptive advertising by making certain statements regarding its AccuFit Digital System that were allegedly false or misleading.

That’s not the only deception. They also charge extras during optometry exams and provide no information from those extra tests, such as taking optical nerve photos charging and doing nothing, not even reviewing them or giving them to me. The optometrist at the location I visited laughed when I asked about what the photos showed us, and said he had no idea why I’d even ask medical questions at LensCrafters, that’s not an exaggeration. Now a year later I see the same location has signed me up for an appointment which I must confirm or have cancelled- upon reading the email now the optometrist will work remotely… yet they claim this visit is important for eye health. So now the doctor won’t even look at your eyes. This is deceptive- no actual medial information was provided by their doctor, in fact even the prescription was wrong yet they kept my money. So now they want more money and keep sticking to their service providing health benefits for the eyes, buts it’s only so they can sell at any cost to customers. So I’m adding this comment if it’s helpful or you want to contact me. This did happen in NY state.
