Daiichi Sankyo is facing a growing multidistrict litigation (MDL) from patients alleging serious Benicar diarrhea side effects. Each of these patients was prescribed Benicar to treat their hypertension and high blood pressure and allegedly experienced gastrointestinal problems soon after starting the medication.
Benicar is a part of the ARB, or angiotension II receptor blocker medication class that works by preventing angiotensin II from tightening blood vessels. This allows the blood vessels to dilate and ease circulation for blood flow, which lowers the chances of heart disease and other cardiac problems.
However, many patients are alleging they suffered serious and permanent damages from Benicar diarrhea side effects. This has resulted in numerous Benicar claims being consolidated against Daiichi Sankyo.
One of the most recent product liability claims added to the MDL is an Indiana man, who also alleges serious Benicar diarrhea side effects.
Plaintiff Albert P. was prescribed Benicar in 2005 for typical treatment purposes and to lower his chances of heart disease. At no point during his prescription did Albert use Benicar outside of treatment purposes nor did he deviate from prescription instructions, he reports.
Even with this diligence, Albert still allegedly experienced serious Benicar side effects including:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal Pain
- Malabsorption
- Fatigue
- Malnutrition
- Dehydration
- Inflammation
- Villous Atrophy
- Sprue-like Enteropathy
- Colitis
- Other Intestinal Injury
Overview of Benicar Diarrhea Side Effects
It is important to note that conditions like atrophy result in permanent problems in absorbing nutrients and keeping up with the body’s nutritional requirements in general.
Villous atrophy is a gastrointestinal condition in which the small intestines become damaged making the body unable to gain the full nutritional benefits from food. Villous atrophy has widely become associated with Benicar diarrhea side effects, as sprue-like enteropathy often leads to this condition.
Previously, it was thought that many Benicar patients who experienced these symptoms were suffering from celiac disease. However, in 2012, the Mayo Clinic showed otherwise when it analyzed over 20 Benicar patients exhibiting celiac-like symptoms.
When the patients tested negative for celiac, researchers concluded there could be a potential link between Benicar and gastrointestinal problems and sent their findings to the FDA.
This resulted in the agency releasing a public warning in 2013, warning patients that Benicar could cause potential short or long term gastrointestinal problems.
The FDA also noted that these symptoms have a higher likelihood of occurrence in Benicar prescriptions compared to other medications in its class.
Furthermore, the FDA noted that after the potential association was discovered the link between Benicar and cases of undiagnosed enteropathy had dropped by 30%.
Albert and other patients are filing legal action against Daiichi Sankyo for failing to warn them against Benicar diarrhea side effects, along with other counts of negligence. Albert states that he never would have used the medication if he had known the risk of Benicar diarrhea side effects.
