Cambridge University is facing serious negligence allegations in a recently filed asbestos cancer lawsuit. A former professor is alleging the hallways were filled with the toxic material. The claims describe “dusty corridors” alleging that he had inadvertently inhaled the toxic substances on a daily basis leading to lung cancer.
This asbestos cancer lawsuit is being filed by economist, Dr. Michael Anyadike-Danes, who says he was recently diagnosed with mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a very rare form of respiratory cancer, which is specifically caused by asbestos exposure.
Mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers are inhaled or swallowed and become embedded in the mucus lining of the lungs, which eventually fester after decades of dormancy.
Due to the fact that mesothelioma can take up to 50 years to show symptoms, this disease is often diagnosed at a very latent stage and gives patients little treatment options.
There are strict policies in the United States and other countries in how asbestos should be handled. Dr. Anyadike-Danes alleged Cambridge failed to follow these policies, and that he would walk through a hallway with a “crumbling” asbestos lined corridor on a daily basis during the 1980s.
Overview of Asbestos Cancer Lawsuit
According to the asbestos cancer lawsuit, Dr. Anyadike-Danes was diagnosed with mesothelioma soon after developing a persistent cough. He had undergone multiple diagnostic tests, including having three liters of liquid drained from his left lung, which eventually led doctors to their diagnosis.
Dr. Anyadike-Danes opted to file legal action against Cambridge, alleging the university either knew or should have known about the dangers of asbestos exposure.
“It is shocking because the dangers of asbestos were very well known by the mid-1980s and yet the university did nothing to remove it and ensure the safety of those people who used the corridor,” said Dr. Anyadike-Danes in his lawsuit.
Asbestos was popularly used as insulation material for piping and other construction purposes before the 1980s, when health officials began discovering its dangerous nature. In the United States, asbestos was popularly used for USA Navy ships during World War II.
Due to its fire and chemical resistant qualities, asbestos was the primary construction choice for many industries. However, a number of United States Navy veterans, manufacturing retirees, and other retirees from a similar field are reportedly developing long term health complications like mesothelioma.
According to the lawyers involved in the asbestos cancer lawsuit, hundreds of other former university staff and students may be at risk for developing asbestos health problems if they used the same corridor located in the basement of the Austin Robinson building. This building was built in the 1960s, and housed the economics department.
In response to the asbestos cancer allegations, Cambridge has reportedly started a program to identify and safely remove asbestos from its buildings. The university’s website states that “It is known that a number of buildings within the University of Cambridge estate have asbestos-containing materials used historically in their construction.”
Dr. Anyadike-Danes states that while it is good that Cambridge is undertaking this program, it is too late for many people. The lawyers involved in his asbestos cancer claim are now trying to track down “anyone who may have regularly used the Austin Robinson building during the 1980s.”
