October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, a month meant to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer and also raise money for breast cancer research.

Each year brands across the country change their logos pink to spread the word, but this year spreading awareness for breast cancer research is especially important. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the past year posed a challenge for breast cancer prevention with setbacks in screenings and early detection

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) backs this up. According to a CDC report released in June 2021, the total number of breast cancer screenings declined by 87% during April 2020 when compared to the previous 5-year averages for that month.

“This study highlights a decline in cancer screening among women of racial and ethnic minority groups with low incomes when their access to medical services decreased at the beginning of the pandemic,” Amy DeGroff, health scientist and lead author of the study, said in the report.

The CDC report states the decline could be attributed to the screening sites being closed and the temporary suspension of breast and cervical cancer screening services due to COVID-19. It also said the “requirement or recommendation to stay at home and the fear of contracting COVID-19 also likely deterred individuals from seeking health care services, including cancer screening.”

Regardless, the American Cancer Society stresses the importance of getting screened regularly.

“Finding breast cancer early and getting state-of-the-art cancer treatment are the most important strategies to prevent deaths from breast cancer,” it said. “Breast cancer that’s found early, when it’s small and has not spread, is easier to treat successfully.”

Although the COVID-19 pandemic did result in several procedures, including cancer screenings, to be put on hold, the American Cancer Society said most healthcare facilities are now offering these services again. The CDC also has several guidelines to make sure that the patients and doctors remain safe.

The news that breast cancer screenings have gone down comes a year after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that women who have Allegran BIOCELL textured breast implants may have an increased risk of developing a type of cancer known as breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA ALCL).

The FDA has requested that Allegran issue a voluntary recall of several of its implants as of July 2019. But, the company likely did not warn the women who developed anaplastic large cell lymphoma after breast augmentation surgery that they could get cancer from breast implants. If you have an Allegran implant you may benefit from a consultation with a medical device attorney to see if they qualify to file a breast implant lawsuit.
