A Texas woman recently filed a Boston Scientific vaginal mesh lawsuit, alleging the product caused serious injuries.
The plaintiff, Janet P., was implanted with Boston Scientific vaginal mesh products on Aug. 5, 2016. However, after being implanted with the device, she began suffering from a number of complications.
In response to these injuries, Janet filed this Boston Scientific vaginal mesh lawsuit on multiple counts, including negligence, design defect, manufacturing defect, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, and punitive damages.
The specific Boston Scientific vaginal mesh products involved in this vaginal mesh lawsuit were the Advantage Fit System, as well as Xenform. Janet had previously been implanted with a MiniArc Precise product in 2012 from American Medical Systems.
Boston Scientific Vaginal Mesh
A vaginal mesh implant (sometimes referred to as transvaginal mesh or pelvic mesh) is a device that is used to treat several conditions common for women. Women who suffer from stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) are often implanted with vaginal mesh. These conditions are quite common for women following a hysterectomy, menopause, or childbirth.
Boston Scientific vaginal mesh products are advertised as a quick and easy insertion process, far less invasive than abdominal device implantation. Many patients believe that, given the minimally invasive procedure, products like Boston Scientific vaginal mesh implants are the safer choice. However, thousands of women who have been implanted with vaginal mesh devices have filed lawsuits alleging a number of serious side effects.
Boston Scientific Vaginal Mesh Side Effects
Serious complications linked with Boston Scientific vaginal mesh and similar products include mesh erosion and organ perforation, which can be quite serious.
Indeed, mesh erosion can occur as mesh breaks apart and passes through the vaginal wall. This causes bleeding, severe pain, infection, and even nerve damage. Organ perforation is not a separate complication, but instead is the second stage of mesh erosion. Once the mesh erodes through the vaginal wall, it can perforate other organs.
The FDA reported in 2008 that complications from vaginal mesh products were rare. Just three years later, in 2011, the agency updated its statement to warn patients and doctors that such complications are not, in fact, rare, and are actually linked with a number of vaginal mesh products. In 2011, the FDA also reported that “it is not clear that transvaginal POP repair with mesh is more effective” than repair without mesh, and may even “expose patients to greater risk.”
