Pharmaceutical companies Bayer HealthCare and Johnson & Johnson are facing a new Xarelto lawsuit filed by a Florida woman. The woman alleges that as an alleged result of internal bleeding from Xarelto, her loved one died unexpectedly.
Bleeding from Xarelto has been a prominent concern for the medical community for the past several years, but patients still report injuries after using the medication. Plaintiff Joanne C. is filing this Xarelto lawsuit on behalf of the late Federico C., who allegedly died from uncontrollable internal bleeding.
Plaintiff Joanne C. is filing this Xarelto lawsuit on behalf of the late Federico C., who allegedly died from uncontrollable internal bleeding.
According to the Xarelto lawsuit, Federico was prescribed the medication in August 2014 to treat his atrial fibrillation. This treatment is very common with Xarelto use, as it lowers the chances of stroke or other blood clot injuries.
Patients have reported uncontrollable bleeding from Xarelto, even when taking precautions. It is important to note that at all times during his prescription, Frederico had followed all prescription instructions and physician’s advice, according to the lawsuit.
However, Frederico had reportedly experienced severe gastrointestinal bleeding on Oct. 03, 2014, and was not able to recover. Even with emergency intervention, Frederico had ultimately died from his alleged Xarelto bleeding injuries.
Joanne filed legal action soon after Frederico’s death, alleging the companies knew the risk of Xarelto but had failed to warn against the side effects.
Bleeding from Xarelto
Xarelto was approved by the FDA in 2011, and was the second new generation anticoagulant to be approved for blood thinning treatment purposes. Bayer HealthCare and Johnson & Johnson had combined efforts to release the drug soon after Pradaxa’s debut in 2010, and has experienced mass financial success as a result.
This medication is a part of the new generation oral anticoagulants, which are meant to compete against each other and original blood thinner warfarin. Newer anticoagulants have been marketed to be more efficient and convenient than warfarin, as they can be prescribed in a single dose and do not require frequent dose adjustments by doctors.
However, warfarin is anticoagulant with a readily available bleeding antidote, where Xarelto still has none. Fresh frozen plasma an intravenous vitamin K administration can reverse the anti-clotting effect of warfarin. For patients eperiencing bleeding on Xarelto, they can only be stabilized while the medication processed and exits the body.
Xarelto and other anticoagulants work by inhibiting the body’s clotting mechanism, and improves the overall circulation process.
However, this process also prevents the body’s recovery process to treat minor internal bleeding injuries, which can quickly turn life-threatening. Numerous patients have reported serious injury allegedly due to bleeding from Xarelto and other new generation anticoagulants.
Joanne’s Xarelto lawsuit will be joining multidistrict litigation (MDL) No. 2592, where it will stand alongside similar claims. Joanne is alleging multiple counts of damages from the pharmaceutical companies, alleging the companies could have prevented Frederico’s experience of bleeding from Xarelto.
This Xarelto Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-01410-EEF-MBN, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
