Biomet Inc. is facing a new Biomet hip replacement lawsuit from a Nevada woman alleging serious metal hip implant complications. According to the Biomet hip replacement lawsuit, the woman had opted to receive the metal on metal M2a Magnum hip implant and soon experienced metal hip implant problems.
Plaintiff Johanne S. is filing this Biomet hip replacement lawsuit against the manufacturing company for allegedly failing to warn against metal hip implant complications. According to the Biomet hip replacement lawsuit, Johanne underwent left hip replacement surgery on June 25, 2007 and later underwent right hip replacement surgery on Sept. 17, 2007.
By the time these M2a Magnum metal hip implants were implanted, the adverse effects associated with metal hip implants had been reported to the FDA and Biomet allegedly knew their metal hip implant was defective. Biomet Inc. allegedly failed to disclose this information to Johanne or other metal hip implant patients.
It is important to note that Johanne and her physicians had opted for the M2a Magnum metal hip implants, after reviewing the marketing materials provided by the defendant. However, Johanne says she ultimately began experiencing serious metal hip implant complications.
Due to these complications, Johanne had to undergo revision surgery to replace the right metal hip implant on Nov. 23, 2016 and will undergo a second revision surgery of her left hip at a later date. It is important to note that revision surgery is considered riskier than the initial implant surgery, due to the higher chance of complications.
Overview of Metal Hip Implant Complications
According to the Biomet hip replacement lawsuit, over 350 injury reports associated with the M2a Magnum Hip System have been filed with the FDA. Metal hip implant complications have become a major concern in the medical community and patient population.
When metal hip implants were released to the market, they were thought to be overtly superior to their plastic and ceramic counterparts. They were marketed towards younger, more active patients as a more durable implant that could allow them to continue their active lifestyle after surgery. However, after many of these implants entered the market, numerous patients and doctors reported instances of metallosis, or blood metal poisoning, in conjunction with these devices.
When the all metal components of the ball and socket joints interact, metal ions are shed into the bloodstream. This may cause a number of other complications including device failure, corrosion, fretting, debilitating pain, tissue death, and formation of pseudotumors.
Johanne had filed this Biomet hip replacement lawsuit against the company after becoming aware the company either knew or should have known the risks associated with metal hip implant complications.
This Biomet Hip Replacement Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-00445-RLM-MGG, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, South Bend Division.
