woman with nauseaA new product liability lawsuit has joined the Benicar MDL in progress in New Jersey federal court, filed by a Mississippi woman who alleges personal injury as a result of taking the drug.

Plaintiff Antoinette W. is a 48 year-old woman who began taking olmesartan products Benicar HCT and Azor in 2009 and allegedly suffered Benicar GI side effects.

Benicar (olmesartan) and its related medications, Benicar HCT and Azor, and another medication Tribenzor, are all included in the Benicar multidistrict litigation against the manufacturers of these drugs.

Benicar drugs are used to treat high blood pressure in susceptible individuals. It works by dilating the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more freely with less pressure within the vessels.

It is been very helpful for some patients who have been able to control their high blood pressure with other means, but some patients, like Antoinette, can have very severe side effects as a result of the drugs.

As a result of taking the olmesartan products, Antonette stated that she suffered severe Benicar G.I. side effects including, but not limited to: “nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain/discomfort, malabsorption, fatigue, malnutrition, dehydration, information, villous damage/atrophy/blunting, sprue-like enteropathy, olmesartan associated enteropathy, colitis, [and] intestinal injury and damage.”

Antoinette has brought forth fifteen counts against the defendants including products liability allegations for design defect and failure to warn, multiple counts of negligence and fraud, breaches of express and implied warranties, violation of state consumer protection laws of Mississippi and punitive damages.

She is seeking a trial by jury, compensatory damages, punitive damages, interest, costs of suit and any additional relief as deemed proper by the Court.

Benicar GI Side Effects

All of the lawsuits in the Benicar multidistrict litigation allege some type of severe Benicar GI side effects resulted from the use of the drug. Many times, the side effects experienced by users of Benicar products mimic a serious condition known as celiac disease.

Celiac disease patients have the severe immune reaction to gluten, found in wheat, barley and rye. The body suffers an autoimmune response when even tiny amounts of the protein are ingested, causing severe stomach pain, digestive issues, malabsorption and other conditions because part of the small intestine becomes damaged.

When Benicar patients are tested for celiac disease, however, they test negative for the condition but are dealing with many of the same issues. Patients are eventually diagnosed with drug induced enteropathy (intestine disease) and villous atrophy (degradation of the fingerlike projections and small intestine).

Due to Benicar’s severe digestive disturbances, malnutrition often results, and patients may have to be hospitalized due to severe dehydration and nutrition deficiencies.
