A Chicago man recently filed a Benicar gastroenteritis lawsuit against Daiichi Sankyo, alleging the drug caused serious injuries.
In order to treat his high blood pressure, the plaintiff, Eric J., began taking Benicar at the direction of his doctor in 2014. However, after taking Benicar, Eric began experiencing a number of serious complications.
According to his Benicar gastroenteritis lawsuit, these complications included nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain/discomfort, fatigue, malnutrition, inflammation, sprue-like enteropathy, and intestinal injury and damage. The Benicar gastroenteritis lawsuit also claims that these injuries led to medical expenses.
After suffering from these injuries, the plaintiff decided to file a Benicar gastroenteritis lawsuit against Daiichi Sankyo, hoping to reclaim an award for his injuries. Eric filed this lawsuit on multiple counts, including design defect, failure to warn, gross negligence, fraudulent concealment, fraud, breach of express and implied warranties, among several others. He also filed for punitive damages.
Like Eric, a growing number of patients allegedly injured by Benicar are filing lawsuits against Daiichi Sankyo over complications like these.
Benicar Basics
Benicar (also known by its generic name, olmesartan medoxomil) is a popular blood pressure medication, or hypertension drug. Benicar is widely used to treat hypertension, and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration back in 2002. Since its release onto the market, Benicar has rapidly increased in popularity, becoming one of the most widely used blood pressure drugs.
However, despite the drug’s popularity, some patients claim that they have suffered from serious gastrointestinal problems from Benicar that can have long-lasting effects.
Benicar Side Effects
Several studies have linked olmesartan drugs like Benicar with serious side effects. Among the possible complications that have been reported are the following:
- Villous atrophy
- Sprue-like enteropathy
- Colitis
- Kidney failure
- Malabsorption
- Malnutrition
- Dehydration
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting/Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Inflammation
Inflammation after the use of Benicar can be indicative of gastroenteritis, or stomach flu. Gastroenteritis is a gut infection that can have several harmful symptoms, including diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
In July 2013, the FDA issued a warning about serious side effects of the drug, linking the medication to chronic diarrhea, weight gain, and gastrointestinal issues. The FDA also introduced several label changes to reflect their acknowledgment of the potential side effects.
Filing a Benicar Gastroenteritis Lawsuit
Indeed, as knowledge of Benicar side effects, more and more patients are filing Benicar gastroenteritis lawsuits against manufacturer Daiichi Sankyo. As of yet, over 1,250 lawsuits have been filed against Daiichi Sanko over a variety of Benicar side effects, from chronic diarrhea to stomach pain.
Injured plaintiffs claim in their Benicar lawsuits that the drug’s manufacturers either knew or should have known about the risk of such Benicar problems, yet failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community about serious Benicar side effects.
If you or someone you love has suffered from Benicar side effects, you may be able to file a Benicar lawsuit. Filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering of Benicar side effects, but it can help to compensate for any financial expenses incurred through medical bills or even lost wages.
The Benicar Gastroenteritis Lawsuit is Case No. 1:17-cv-00527-RBK-JS, in the U.S. District Court for the Camden Vicinage of the District of New Jersey.
