9/11 cancer victims compensation fund New York skylineAfter the horrific events of September 11, 2001, thousands of first responders, volunteers, and residents suffered from serious injuries. Compensation funds have been established to help compensate victims like these who were injured in the attack. Some of these injuries were immediately apparent, like broken bones, lacerations, and more.

In the years since the attacks, many more have been affected by injuries that have surfaced later. Many were also affected by harmful materials and toxins at Ground Zero in the weeks and months following the attack. These injuries may take quite some time to surface, but many who were at Ground Zero are now being diagnosed serious illnesses, including various cancers.

If you have been diagnosed with cancer and were near Ground Zero in the aftermath of the September 11 attack, you may qualify for compensation from the World Trade Center compensation fund.

The World Trade Center Compensation Fund

So far, the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund has awarded more than $3 billion to eligible injured residents, workers, and first responders. This World Trade Center compensation fund was created to help those who were injured in the September 11 attack, and it covers those who now suffer from serious health problems because of exposure to harmful toxins at Ground Zero. To this day, firefighters, first responders, and many more continue to suffer and even die from illnesses caused by this exposure.

The air at and around Ground Zero after September 11 carried harmful materials including aluminum, asbestos, gas, and burned jet fuel, according to researchers. Any of these substances can lead to serious problems, including lung disease, asthma, and cancer.

Tens of thousands of responders worked at Ground Zero in the weeks following the attacks and are at risk of developing diseases from the exposure to harmful toxins. So far, the World Trade Center compensation fund has received nearly 30,000 eligibility forms. Almost 17,000 have been approved, and thousands more have yet to be processed.

However, while the World Trade Center Health Program will run for another 75 years, the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund will be closing down at the end of 2020, even though many more may yet be eligible to receive compensation. It’s anticipated that chronic diseases from Ground Zero exposure will continue to surface for years to come.

Eligibility for Compensation

Those diagnosed with one of dozens of different cancers in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks may be eligible for compensation from the World Trade Center compensation fund.
