Apple reached a class action lawsuit settlement this week regarding the “Antennagate” issues that plagued the original iPhone 4. The settlement will reportedly give iPhone 4 buyers the choice to claim either $15 cash or a new case from Apple.
The iPhone 4 settlement will resolve 18 separate class action lawsuits that were consolidated into one, all claiming Apple was “misrepresenting and concealing material information in the marketing, advertising, sale and servicing of its iPhone 4.”
The rash of lawsuits were filed after consumers realized the new iPhone 4 had an antenna design flaw that caused users to inadvertently kill the wireless signal simply by holding the phone a certain way.
Apple ignored the issue for weeks and tried to squash the problem in 2010 by offering customers a free bumper case for their iPhone 4. Apple then quietly fixed the issue by redesigning the iPhone 4 antenna twice in 2011, never admitting they were responsible for the Atennagate issues.
More than 21 million iPhone 4 owners are eligible for the payout from the class action settlement, and will receive emails about the settlement some time in April.
