An Apple iPhone class action lawsuit investigation was launched against the tech giant, accusing the company of allegations including deliberately slowing down iPhones with older batteries so that owners would trade them in for a new upgrade or iPhone.
The Apple iPhone class action lawsuit investigation is looking for consumers who, after an iOS update in their iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, and iPhone 7, had their phones slow down or unexpectedly shut down.
For many years, iPhone owners noticed their iPhones getting slower the older they got, says the Apple iPhone class action lawsuit investigation. However, after a battery would be replaced for the phone, they noticed the phone picked up speed again.
Tech writers and iPhone owners noticed the pattern and began to contemplate whether Apple was deliberately slowing down older iPhones. Apple eventually admitted to deliberately designing recent operating system updates to slow down iPhones.
Apple admitted to the slowdown after a data-driven report was released from Geekbench on Dec. 18, 2017. The company stated that it knowingly changed its iPhone software to make the phone run slower.
The Geekbench report asked, “While we expect battery capacity to decrease as batteries age, we expect processor performance to stay the same. However, users with older iPhones, with lower-than-expected Geekbench scores, have reported that replacing the battery increases their score (as well as the performance of the phone). What’s going on here?”
Apple Admits to Slowing Down iPhones
Soon after the data-driven report was released by Geekbench, Apple admitted to the deliberate changes it made to iPhone software to make the phone run slower. However, according to Apple, these changes were necessary. The company explained that as an iPhone’s battery gets older, it becomes unable to satisfy an iPhone’s demand for power, putting the phone at risk for shutting down.
By reorganizing the system’s processing to not require as much power, the company needed to incorporate an iOS change, Apple explains.
The iPhone’s speed slows down due to the processing change affecting the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, and iPhone 7, sources say. Regardless of the company’s statement, critics argue that Apple should have been much more transparent about these issues.
Consumers believe that Apple is deliberately causing their iPhones to slow down in order to persuade them purchase and upgrade to a new phone. Additionally, consumers say they were never advised that their phones’ performance would alter and slow down with an upgrade, or that the drop in the phones’ performance can be repaired by merely replacing the battery.
Apple iPhone Class Action Lawsuit
iPhone owners have filed lawsuits seeking compensation for the phones’ loss in performance and speed.
The Apple iPhone class action lawsuit accuses Apple of failing to give consumers the performance and speed that they paid for. In some cases, consumers have paid nearly $1,000 for the device.
Consumers also accuse Apple of failing to notify them that a simple battery change could have repaired the phones’ performance at a much lower cost than having them purchase a newer and more expensive phone.

Hello…Wrote to you about my three iPhones sixes, and their problems with the battery and slowing down and turning off. That was about 3 to 4 months ago, I have since moved, and live in Chelsea Alabama now and I have my maiden name back…. would love to be still considered in this lawsuit. Your law firm wrote to me and asked if I would like to participate in this, I wrote you back and said yes… I will help you the best I can. Thank you so much for your time and have a good day … ?
My husband and I owed iPhones that were clearly slowed down due to the battery.
