Apple’s Epic Games Lawsuit Appeal Overview:
- Why: Apple wants to put a stop to an order requiring the company to make App Store policy changes by December.
- Who: Apple filed an appeal in the Epic Games lawsuit.
- Where: The Epic Games lawsuit is pending in California federal court
Apple has appealed a California federal judge’s ruling that would require the tech giant to update its App Store policies that currently prohibit app developers from using non-Apple payment systems — and the target of the Epic Games lawsuit.
This appeal, which requests a postponement of the required changes to Apple’s App Store policy, is the latest move in the ongoing court case between Epic Games and Apple. The ruling requires Apple to change its App Store rules within 90 days after the court’s decision on Sept. 10, 2021.
Arguing the appeal in court will delay any changes to the App Store; if Apple wins its appeal, the changes prompted by the Epic Games lawsuit will come even later.
Epic Games Lawsuit Overview
The court case stems from Apple’s policies that prevented developers from directing app users to other purchasing mechanisms within their own apps.
The judge’s ruling also ordered that Apple could not prevent developers from communicating with customers through points of contact that customers provided voluntarily during app registration.
Epic Games also filed its own appeal to the ruling, arguing with the judge’s conclusion that Apple is not a monopoly and that it’s success was “not illegal.”
