Abilify Patient Says Drug May Cause Compulsive Shopping and GamblingSome of the devastating reported side effects of medication Abilify includes compulsive shopping and compulsive gambling. Unfortunately, many patients who began taking this medication claim that they were never told about the dangers of compulsive shopping and that they racked up significant financial debt or challenges because of the side effects of this drug.

Plaintiff Filomena P. has filed an Abilify lawsuit against the makers of Abilify, alleging she suffered serious side effects of compulsive shopping and compulsive gambling. The lawsuit includes complaints related to negligence, strict liability, breach of express and implied warranty, and negligent misrepresentation.

If someone suddenly develops an uncontrollable urge to do anything after taking a drug, they may blame themselves and don’t realize that this could be a side effect of the medication. The devastating discovery that a drug could be linked to this behavior could lead to financial ruin.

Many patients began to report similar side effects, ultimately prompting lawsuits. The plaintiffs in this now consolidated Abilify multidistrict litigation argue that Abilify contributes to an increased risk of dangerous side effects including uncontrollable compulsive behaviors like compulsive shopping.

Plaintiffs say the labeling of this medication in Canada and Europe warned about the risk of pathological gambling for several years. However, they allege there was no mention before January 2016 on the U.S. label for the drug about pathological gambling or compulsive shopping.

Pathological gambling was added to the label in January 2016. Still, the patient guide did not include any further information about compulsive behaviors or gambling, plaintiffs claim. In 2016, the FDA announced that warnings related to uncontrollable or compulsive urges to binge eat, gamble, shop or have sex would be included on the Abilify label.

The label says that since patients might not see these behaviors as unique or problematic, it is important for any prescribers to ask patients about the development of new compulsive shopping or binge eating behavior, in addition to other compulsive activities.

Enough Abilify lawsuits have been filed by patients seeking compensation for these costly side effects that the federal court system has consolidated these claims into a single multidistrict litigation. They allege that the manufacturers knew about the risk and failed to disclose this possible side effect to patients, therefore leaving the plaintiffs to suffer serious financial problems.

Plaintiffs claim that the defendants put Abilify onto the market with the intent that it would be advertised and marketed all throughout the United States, but that patients never had enough information to make an informed decision about whether Abilify was the right choice for them. They claim that use of Abilify can lead to unexpected side effects that can put users in an unexpected situation.

While taking a medication that they anticipated would help them, plaintiffs say, they had no reason to expect the development of compulsive shopping behavior and its associated financial losses. Many of those plaintiffs have come together in order to file lawsuits to hold the defendant and the manufacturer accountable.

The Compulsive Shopping Abilify Lawsuit is case 3:18-CV-01384-MCR-GRJ filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida, Pensacola Division.
