A woman shops in a drugstore.Women who purchased tampons sold under the Kotex brand could be affected by side effects and symptoms when attempting to remove them. Many U by Kotex tampons have already been recalled because of the problems directly reported by consumers.

Women who may still have these tampons at home should be aware of the risks they may present.

Are U by Kotex Tampons Safe?

The news of the recall and online reports from consumers who have had problems with the tampons have led many to wonder whether or not these tampons are safe at all. The tampons were pulled off the shelves by Kimberly-Clarke after numerous reports were filed that the tampons could unravel inside of the body.

When a tampon unravels inside a user’s body, removing it safely could require medical intervention. Some women say they already had to seek medical attention to have small bits of the tampons removed by the body. Despite the discomfort associated with having to go through such a procedure, serious health risks could be present for women who do not have the tampon fully removed or who are not aware of the risks.

According to a Glamour article, gynecologists state that there have been several reports of infections, such as bladder infections, yeast infections, and bacterial vaginosis. Other women who have used these tampons have reported pain and bleeding and irritation and swelling.

A foreign object like a tampon that is retained inside a person’s body can also cause toxic shock syndrome. Any woman who believes that part of the tampon remains stuck inside is encouraged to get medical attention because of the serious complications associated with leaving the item in for a longer period of time.

Women who have already dealt with this problem blame the manufacturer for a defective product, arguing that the buyers had no reason to expect pieces would break off inside of them.

What Tampons are Included in the Recall?

The recall applies to U by Kotex Sleek Tampons, Regular Absorbency. U by Kotex Sleek Tampons, Super Absorbency and Super Plus Absorbency are not included in the recall. The tampons that are subject to the recall were distributed for sale between Oct. 17, 2016, and Oct. 23, 2018.

Consumers can determine whether or not they have been affected by looking at the lot number on the box, which is a 9-digit number on the bottom and entering it into the Kotex recall database.

Tampons have been regulated by the Food and Drug Administration since several women died in the 1980s. Following those incidents, guidance regarding tampons has been not to wear them for more than eight hours at a time.

Plenty of the purchasers who have already filed reports over the defective tampons say they were using them as recommended but did not know about the possibility that the tampons could break down inside their body and possibly lead to health problems.

I’ve used this U by Kotex Regular several times and had this happen where I had to pull out some of the tampon that was left inside of me. I really thought it was my fault.
