Are Skechers Light Up Shoes Burning Feet?Light up shoes have been popular among children for years. A new trend in light up shoes involves footwear with soles that light up, and one of the more popular brands with this style of light up shoe is Skechers.

Despite the popularity of these trendy new sneakers, some consumers claim that there are Skechers light up shoes burning feet due to a defective battery that can explode.

Unfortunately, the problem with Skechers light up shoes burning feet is made particularly severe because the defect most significantly targets children, as the light up shoes are part of the Skechers Kids brand and thus available in kids’ sizes, for both boys and girls.

According to a WSB-TV report, one New York woman claims that her 9-year-old son’s feet suffered from second-degree burns after his lightup Skechers shoes got wet, causing the batteries to leak harmful chemicals into the shoes. “If parents buy these, I recommend they do not get them wet or jump in puddles,” the mother told WSB-TV. “I know kids love them because of the cool lights, but be careful.”

Defective Skechers Light Up Shoes

According to customer complaints, these light up shoes from Skechers have a battery placed within the sole of the shoe that can cause chemical burns or even explode. These batteries, known as Ni-Cad batteries, are rechargeable, and are generally used in small devices or in small spaces, like the sole of a shoe.

Ni-Cad batteries may be small and light, but are also extremely toxic, consumers claim. Because of the airtight seal on the sole of the shoe that encloses the battery, there is no ventilation, which means that gas can build up and even cause the battery to explode.

Some note that the risk of Skechers light up shoes burning feet increases if the shoes are run through a washing machine, or exposed to water in simple ways like jumping in puddles. This may lead to the battery rusting, which can also cause it to malfunction or explode.

Consumers claim that Ni-Cad battery explosions that occur while a shoe is being worn can lead to severe injuries to the feet and legs. This may be exacerbated for children whose skin is wet due to sweat or playing in water.

Shoes with a Ni-Cad battery allegedly affected from Skechers include the S-Lights, Shopkins, and Twinkle Toes lines purchased from 2015 to the present. These shoes generally retail for between $39.99 and $77.

Skechers Light Up Shoes Investigation

If you or a loved one has been burned or otherwise injured because of a burning or exploding battery in Skechers light up shoes, you may be able to file a lawsuit.

So far, at least one lawsuit has been filed over Skechers light up shoes burning feet. The plaintiff alleges that Skechers has been aware of the risks associated with the Ni-Cad battery for years, which poses a “clear and present” danger to children who wear these shoes. However, she says the company has failed to fix the problem or warn the public about the risk of Skechers light up shoes burning feet. Instead, the lawsuit claims, the warnings included with the shoes focus on taking care of the shoes’ lights rather than preventing injuries to children.

If you have purchased Skechers light up shoes sometime since 2015, only for the battery to burn or otherwise injure the wearer or a bystander, you may be able to join a class action lawsuit investigation.
