Consumers might experience life-threatening risks if their brakes fail, ultimately leading to a Ford F-150 brake class action lawsuit.

Ford trucks allegedly experience brake failure due to a defect, according to consumer complaints and a recent Ford F-150 brake class action lawsuit.

Ford F-150 trucks from model year 2013 to 2018 may be affected by a defect which can lead to unexpected brake failure. Brake failure, which is allegedly caused by defective seals in the brake system, occurs when brake fluid leaks from the master cylinders into the brake boosters.

Some owners of F-150 trucks have reported serious problems associated with the brake defect. One consumer complained that, when their brakes failed, their truck “crossed the street, went up the curb, and struck my neighbor’s landscape wall, damaging it severely.” Another consumer reported losing control of their truck due to brake failure and colliding with a semi-truck.

Ford trucks were subject to a brake-related recall in 2016 which affected 2013-2014 Ford F-150 trucks with 3.5 liter engines. The recall notice released by Ford said that the affected trucks could “experience a loss of brake fluid from the brake master cylinder reservoir into the brake booster,” which had the potential to result in “an audible chime, message center alert, […] a change in brake pedal travel and feel […] longer pedal travel, increased pedal effort, and extended stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash.” Ford dealerships were instructed to replace affected master cylinders and brake boosters if brake fluid leaks were found.

However, allegations made in a Ford F-150 brake class action lawsuit claim that the recall did not address all of the models which are affected by the defect. The defect allegedly affects all 2013-2018 Ford F-150s, not only 2013-2014 Ford F-150s with 3.5 liter engines.

Even after the 2016 recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) allegedly received at least 48 reports of brake failure in 2015-2016 F-150s. This prompted safety investigators to look into the issue, but Ford did not expand its recall.

A Ford F-150 brake class action lawsuit was filed over the issue recently. Plaintiff Roy Naasz filed the Ford F-150 brake class action lawsuit after his 2015 Ford F-150 experienced sudden brake failure on an off-ramp. During brake failure, Naasz saw his brake light come on and was forced to use the emergency brake to stop his truck.

When he took his truck to his local dealership, it was reportedly determined that brake fluid had managed to work its way into his brake booster. The repairs, which replaced his brake booster and master cylinder, cost him over $1,000 even after discounts according to the Ford F-150 class action lawsuit.

In his Ford F-150 brake class action lawsuit, Naasz claimed that Ford discovered the defect in 2011 but concealed it and continued to sell the defective vehicles.

The Ford F-150 class action lawsuit also took issue with Ford’s handling of the 2016 recall. He argues that it should have been expanded to include other affected vehicles. Because the recall was not expanded, Naasz claims, consumers have been forced to pay for the necessary repairs without permanent free repairs and reimbursement provided by the automaker.

The Ford F-150 Brake Class Action Lawsuit is Roy Naasz v. Ford Motor Co., Case No. 2:18-cv-13165, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Eastern Michigan.
