Due to recent reports of Ford F-150 brake failures, the car company issued a recall of their 2013 and 2014 Ford F-150 trucks. However, other Ford F-150 brake failures have also been reported in later model trucks, and some truck owners say the recall should be expanded.
Most of the alleged reports of Ford F-150 brake failures have been submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and allegedly describe similar problems.
According to consumer reports, when the failure occurs, the brakes do not slow down the truck even if they are pushed all the way down to the floor. These reports indicate Ford has been allegedly aware of the Ford F-150 brake problems since 2016.
It is currently unknown what is causing the Ford F-150 brake failures, but repair invoices from NHTSA documents indicate that brake fluid was leaking from the master cylinder into other compartments of the engine, including vacuum cylinders and brake boosters.
At the same time, the repair invoices suggest there were no visible signs of a leak. Similar reports of F-150 brake failures have been filed in 38 states, according to an investigation by NBC affiliate WSMV.
According to the reports, the brake failures have been occurring in 2015 and 2016 Ford F-150 trucks. In addition, in internal documents sent from Ford to the NHTSA, the car company had stated they were aware of the more recent brake failure complaints bu that they were made less frequently than with other model years.
These internal documents were reportedly dated from 2016, with the I-Team since finding that incident reports have been increasing in California, Arizona, and Colorado.
Overview of Ford F-150 Brake Failures
WSMV spoke to one consumer who allegedly experienced Ford F-150 brake failure. Chad Wampler, of Savannah, Ga., says he was on vacation with his wife at the time. Wampler says while he was driving his 2015 Ford F-150, his brakes allegedly completely failed. The same thing happened several times later, he says.
Wampler further stated that his only warning was a brake light notification on his dashboard, and that the Ford F-150 brake failures were serious safety defects that need “immediate attention.”
Wampler says he had to pay $1,800 for the repairs and traded his truck for a newer Ford pickup. Even with the alleged Ford F-150 brake failures, Wampler states that he is loyal to Ford but questions how much customers mean to the car company.
Ford allegedly declined WSMV’s request for an interview, responding instead with the following statement:
“We are cooperating with NHTSA, as we always do. We take the safety of our customers very seriously and utilize data to determine which vehicles are included in recalls. When the data indicates a recall is needed, we act quickly on behalf of our customers. We recommend owners experiencing an issue to contact their dealer or Ford customer service.”
