diabetes medicationsA new FDA warning alerts users of Synjardi and other diabetes drugs in its class about the dangers of flesh eating infections.

Synjardi is an SGLT2 inhibitor, a popular type of medication for patients with diabetes. Itโ€™s believed that approximately 1.7 million patients got a prescription for one of these kinds of drugs in 2017 alone.

Theย warning from the FDA specifically addresses the dangers thatย Synjardi side effectsย may includeย developing a severe genital infection. The FDA says SGLT2 inhibitors could lead to development of necrotizing fasciitis of the genitals and genital area.

Any patient who begins using their diabetes drug and notices symptoms such as redness, tenderness or swelling of the genitals and a fever about 100 degrees is advised to get medical attention immediately. The infection can become much worse without intervention at that point.

Antibiotics and surgery may be required for a patient who has already developed this flesh-eating infection, so visiting a doctor is crucial for someone who notices any of the above symptoms and has been taking an SGLT2 inhibitor like Synjardi for any period of time.

Patients taking type-2 diabetes drugs should be aware of these possible Synjardi side effects. Otherwise they may not be able to address the situation until it is too late.

There are a number of other medications that could pose a risk of the development of this flesh-eating bacteria, including Jardiance, Invokana, Farxiga and more.

This side effect is also known as Fournierโ€™s gangrene. It is a life threatening bacterial infection involving the skin surrounding the fat, nerves, muscles and blood vessels of the genital area. Across the United States, it is anticipated that approximately 1.6 out of every 100,000 men will develop the necrotizing fasciitis condition.

Most frequently, the men who experience such severe Synjardi side effects will be between the ages of 50 and 79, but patients of any age could be at risk.

The FDA says that in the period between March 2013 and May 2018, a dozen different reports came in to the government agency regarding a diagnosis of Fournier gangrene.ย Seven of these patients were men and the remaining five were women. Some patients currently taking these diabetes drugs might not know about the Synjardi side effects.

The average time for the infection to develop was just over nine months after the patients began using the medication, although anyone who has experienced unexplained side effects should immediately report these concerns to their doctor as it could be a signal of a life-threatening diagnosis.

All 12 of those patients whose cases were reported to the FDA required surgery in order to remove infected tissue and had to be hospitalized. One of those patients also required skin grafting, and four of those patients developed complications including septic shock, acute kidney injury, and diabetic ketoacidosis. One of the patients died.
