Mainstays dresser recallA Mainstays dresser recall class action lawsuit investigation has been recently announced over reports that the dressers sold by Walmart are at risk for tipping over. Reports say that the dressers are prone to tipping and possibly falling on top of small children, which can cause a number of serious injuries and can even be fatal.

Information about the Mainstays dresser recall by the Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) asks owners to refrain from their use, especially if the dressers are not anchored properly to a wall, and to remove them completely from the reach of children.

Overview: Mainstays Dresser Recall

Large furniture like bookshelves, cabinets, and dressers can be prone to tipping over. In the last couple of years dresser tipping hazards have lead to recalls of products like these. One dresser was subject to an Ikea recall after it was found to be at risk for tipping over.

The product at the center of the Mainstays dresser recall is the four-drawer chest manufactured by Ameriwood Home and sold by Walmart Stores, including their online retail. According to the CPSC, the dresser drawers become unstable if they are not anchored to a wall. They report that the drawers pose “serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children.”

Almost 1.6 million dressers, sold for approximately $60, have been involved in the Mainstays dresser recall. The dressers impacted include those that were sold between April 2009 and May 2016. The affected drawers have plastic drawer glides. Each of the four drawers also have a single decorative pull. There are six different types of colors that also make up the wood chests. These include black forest, while, walnut, ruby red, weathered oak, and alder.

The Mainstays recall was announced after injuries to a four-year-old child resulted. In fact, according to the CPSC, they found that almost 30,000 Americans were injured due to tipping incidents and visited emergency rooms in 2016.

When customers purchase a piece of furniture, particularly a dresser, they expect that the furniture will meet all safety standards. Lawsuits filed alleged that manufacturers should be held liable for tipping injuries and for poor and inadequately designed products. Consumers, like those who purchased a Mainstays dresser, expect their purchased furniture items will have the required safety mechanisms in place to keep their children and loved ones safe from harm.
