Over 1.6 million Ameriwood Home dresser models are being recalled from the market due to the risk of tipping over on children.
According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Mainstays dresser made by American Home sold at Walmart and other retail stores will be withdrawn from the market due to the risk of the furniture tipping over when children climb on them.
The Ameriwood Home dresser products affected by the recall are reportedly dangerous for young children, because they are unstable if they are not properly attached to a wall. These dressers have plastic drawer glides and a single decorative pull handle on each of the four drawers, which are supposed to give customers easy access to open and close them.
Without being anchored to the wall, these Ameriwood Home dresser products pose “serious tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children,” according to the CPSC announcement. Furthermore, these dresser drawers fail to meet the standards of a voluntary industry standard, the CPSC says.
Overview of Ameriwood Home Dresser Recall
The recall affects four-drawer Mainstays Ameriwood Home dresser products sold at Walmart through the company’s website and at retail stores from April 2009 through May 2016. These dressers are priced at around $60 and are popular among consumers.
However, at least one injury was reported to the CSPC involving a four year old child that had been toppled by the dresser. The incident involved a Mainstays dresser, which is made by Ameriwood Home and sold on Walmart.com and at Walmart stores. The recall was issued in September 2017, after the CPSC found that these dressers could tip over onto a child without much effort.
Consumers can tell if their Ameriwood Home dresser is affected by the recall based on the model number in the product’s instruction manual, which includes:

Consumers who have an Ameriwood Home dresser are advised to stop using the product if it is not attached to a wall and to move the dresser in an area that is out of reach of children. In addition, consumers can contact Ameriwood to request a free repair kit that includes wall attachments and feet for the dresser.
These Ameriwood Home dresser products are among several dressers that have been recalled due to dangers of the products tipping over onto children. Customers who buy an Ameriwood Home dresser or similar furniture piece expect the product to be reasonably safe for their home and families, which means meeting industry safety standards.
According to the CPSC, a total of 195 deaths were reported involving furniture tip overs in the United States between 2000 to 2016. The CPSC further found that a child is killed by a falling furniture piece every two weeks in the United States. In 2016, 2,800 injuries were reported, which was 33 percent higher than 2015.
