TCA viewers are reporting that they have received checks from the Smartphone privacy class action settlement worth as much as $417.00.

The Smartphone privacy class action lawsuit, filed in 2011, alleged that mobile device giants, including HTC, Huawei, LG, Motorola, Pantech Wireless, and Samsung, installed software that gathered users’ private information. The plaintiffs in the nearly 70 lawsuits filed over the allegations said that user information collected by the tech companies included names, passwords, text messages, and search history.

According to the class action lawsuit, the tech giants violated the federal Wiretap Act when they included this software on smartphones and tablets, along with state privacy laws.

Samsung and the other defendants sought to dismiss the class action lawsuit on numerous occasions, arguing that they did not “intercept” communications while gathering user data as laid out in the Wiretap Act. Ultimately, however, the plaintiffs won a settlement in the multidistrict litigation totaling $9 million for Class Members.

Class Members in the class action lawsuit settlement included those who who purchased, owned, or were authorized users of certain phones and tablets manufactured by HTC, Huawei, LG, Motorola, Pantech Wireless, or Samsung with service on AT&T, Cricket, Sprint, or T-Mobile between Dec. 1, 2007 through Mar. 1, 2016.

In addition to a cash payout, multiple defendant smartphone and tablet makers agreed to supply a fix that would stop the data gathering software on the affected devices.

There are an estimated 79 million Class Members affected by the alleged wiretapping software on their mobile devices. It was estimated that each Class Member would receive a $149.00 cash award, although TCA viewers are reporting as much as $417.00.

The deadline to submit a claim in the class action lawsuit settlement was June 4, 2016. An appeal to the Smartphone Privacy class action settlement was filed in September 2016, delaying the payout of claims. The settlement website reported that checks were mailed on Sept. 21, 2018.

I just tried to post a comment and it wouldn’t let see if it well this time this is way beyond just a manufacturers not long ago T-Mobile started taking money out of my accounts what’s reason for this happening I went to a T-Mobile store to inquire about switching from Verizon to their network at the end of the conversation I walked out of the store with no ingredient in place And no phone or service a few weeks later T-Mobile started taking money out of my account I brought this to our attention went to the store where it occurred and was turned away and laughed at on the phone multiple times money was removed from my accounts all these things can do ahead at my bank where I ended up being arrested and took the jail because I wanted my money out of the bank because I was worried that more would be taken I have also owned multiple Samsung devices over the years starting in 2018 I also received an email from Samsung about the data breach which didn’t say much other than you had Then part of a data breach so I deleted the message after all I’ve been hacked multiple times over the course of 5 years and each time they tell me the same thing change your password do this well I’m all out of password options it’s very difficult to remember them anymore have changed them so many times it is also extremely frustrating as I am not text savvy and do not possess the skills to navigate through all the steps and processes I am a roofer

I also received the email that gave no direction on what to do and I ended up deleting the email I’ve tried reaching back out for Samsung and have been unsuccessful and any time I searched to try and figure out what to do I am given a list of directions and steps to take which I do not understand because I am not a phone technician it’s very frustrating very p***** off my phone’s been being messed with for over 5 years I’ve owned multiple Samsung devices and have reached out to Google as well multiple times telling them that my accounts have been hacked at 1 point my Facebook was completely stolen from me and disappeared with all the information on it I notified Facebook and they never got back to me either The s*** is out of control excuse my language and it seems That not very much is being done about it or much compensation being offered to the victims Smartphones were the worst idea ever it’s made every American vulnerable and there’s no real way to protect us. Furthermore it is almost impossible to get along without them at this point If there was another option available I would be jumping on board. Oh yes and let me not forget T-Mobile T-Mobile who I inquired about getting service with and who signed me up without my permission and illegally remove money from my bank accounts on multiple occasions and then laughed at me when I contacted them to try and get reimbursed for the money that they took that they never had any business taking
