A recent dim Sierra headlights class action lawsuit investigation has been initiated looking into alleged reports that some GMC Sierra pickups from model years 2014 and 2015 were sold with headlights too dim for safe night driving. Hundreds of GMC truck owners have filed complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about dim Sierra headlights.

GMC owners that have purchased or leased these vehicles have stated that because of the alleged dim Sierra headlights, they feel the trucks are not safe to drive at night. Others have replaced the headlights at their own expense.

Overview: Dim Sierra Headlights

In 2014, many GMC Sierras were manufactured with light bulbs that replaced the double-headlight system. These are known as single-bulb Bi-Halogen headlights that work by moving a shutter to cut off a portion of the projected beam for low beam lights. They would also work by moving the shutter out of the way to use the high beam headlights.

However, many customers have complained about these issues that they are having with the newer GMC Sierra headlight system. According to one vehicle owner of a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500, “The headlights are so dim the truck is dangerous to drive at night. … I drove in a snow storm last night and I couldnt [sic] see ahead of me.”

Another customer who purchased a GMC Sierra 2500 owner says that while he ended up taking his truck in for a bulb replacement to the dealership, he still won’t drive his vehicle at night because of the dim light issue. However, customers state that the dealership is unable to fix the problem, as was the case for a plaintiff who reports that he purchased his new 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 and was forced to cough up $500 for a new headlight assembly system.

Many customers say it’s dangerous to drive their vehicles at night, especially in mountain roads and rural areas where the roads aren’t well paved and lit. These issues surrounding the dim Sierra headlights include them of failing to give the driver enough light to see objects and signs while driving at night.

According to many customer complaints,  owners afraid to drive at night because of the dim headlights. One owner writes: “Headlights are just dim even on high. Have to use fog lights all the time at night and still not all that good.”

Another owner laments having a “[b]rand new GMC Sierra truck that I am afraid to drive at night. I first thought that my eyes suddenly were falling apart or my windshield was tinted, but these headlights are the worst I have ever seen (or more correctly, not seen) on a vehicle.”

Plaintiffs who have filed a GMC Sierra headlight lawsuit allege that the Sierras were sold with inadequate headlights and are explicitly asking the U.S. Court of California for monetary damages in addition to recall requests. If you are a car vehicle owner of a 2014 or 2015 GMC Sierra truck with dim headlight issues, you may be eligible to join the GMC Sierra class action lawsuit investigation.

  1. Kirk Stubblefield says:

We had 2014 GMC Sierra that had over 16 recalls. The brakes would suddenly lock up randomly due to the trailer brake system, there were defects in the headlights causing us to lose the ability to see at night. The recalls were all related to major safety systems such as airbags, seatbelt, brakes. We contacted GMC for a buy back due to the multiple service visits that were unable to resolve the issues. GMC did nothing to make it right & would not authorize the buyback. We took a significant loss on the truck and had to trade it in for only 19k. Considering the truck cost us over 54k it was a major loss.
