Essure birth control, manufactured by Bayer Healthcare, was thought to be a breakthrough contraceptive device for women.
However, it has caused women to suffer a tremendous number of severe adverse side effects, including more than than 4,500 adverse event reports filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
As a result of these reports and side effects that has caused serious health issues, Bayer says that it will discontinue selling the birth control device in the U.S. by the end of the year. This renders thousands of women and victims of the birth control device a symbolic victory.
According to Bayer’s statement the attributable decision was made due to a “decline in U.S. sales of Essure in recent years and the conclusion that the Essure business is no longer sustainable.” The company maintains that it continues to “stand behind the product’s safety and efficacy.”
Overview: Essure Birth Control
Essure birth control was first approved through the FDA’s 501(k) “fast track” system in 2002. It is made up of two small metal coils that are inserted through the vagina and cervix to the fallopian tubes. To stop conception from occurring, the coils cause inflammation and a build-up of scar tissue that then prevents eggs from being carried from the ovaries to the uterus.
However, in recent years there have been very serious health risks reportedly associated with Essure birth control. Some side effects have included the device dislodging or breaking down, and the device migrating to other organs in the body.
Since the FDA’s 2002 Essure birth control approval, over the 15-year period that the device has been on the market, the FDA has received almost 26,000 reports related to Essure side effects. They have included reports of irregular bleeding, fatigue, headaches, and periods.
Reports also warn that Essure may have been approved to quickly and without proper vetting. Allegedly, more sufficient and adequate studies should have been conducted.
Earlier this year, the FDA announced that it would add restrictions to the distribution and sale of Essure. The FDA advised that it would sell Essure to medical health care providers if the providers guaranteed that they would fully notify women of potential and serious complications linked to Essure.
Side effects linked to Essure include muscle weakness, back pain, and joint pain. Women who have also been implanted with Essure have reported that they were diagnosed with fibromyalgia and have suffered from menopetrorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, pelvic pain, back pain, and hair loss.
In a social media movement, particularly on Facebook, more than 36,000 women have joined a private group called Essure Problems — a forum in which they share stories of their injuries and health complications that have stemmed from the device.
An announcement made by the group’s creator, Angie F., hailed the decision by Bayer. She says that the recall “has brought us all to our knees in thanks, relief and celebration. Not one more woman will be harmed by this device. We have won, we have finally won.”
If you or a loved one have suffered complications from Essure birth control, you may be able to join a lawsuit against Bayer for allegedly failing to warn women and their doctors about these complications.
A lawsuit can help you recover additional medical bills and compensate you for unnecessary pain and suffering.
In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
